Theory Of A Deadman - “Wake up Call” European Tour 2018 - Special guests: Into My Vault

Newly turned Pop Rock band THEORY OF A DEADMAN from Canada added three German club shows on their current tour promoting their latest release ‘Wake up Call’. With this record, the band decided to break with their past as a Hard Rock band and composed the majority of songs using the piano.

Into My Vault

The recently formed quartet INTO MY VAULT from Hamburg were given the chance to support THEORY OF A DEADMAN at their German shows. The band has formed somewhere in 2016, and they have yet to release their first album, which is reportedly planned for 2018. https://www.facebook.com/intomyvault / http://www.intomyvault.com

Music & Performance
At 8pm, the band went on stage and started playing their solid, down to earth rock with certain Grunge influences, so the drummer wearing a PANTERA shirt turned out to be slightly misleading. Initially, the band seemed a little nervous and tense, with the singer turning to his back to the audience during song breaks to look at his bandmates for approval. This improved of few songs into the gig, and singer Michael Hutter started addressing the crowd by revealing that he actually was born in Cologne and toasted them with the local “Kölsch” beer. Guitarist Ole Müller also chipped in and told the audience that this was actually just the third gig the band played, making the initial impression the more understandable. Singer Michael actually reacted very professionally, when he accidentally disconnected his microphone cable in the midst of a song, by joking about it afterwards, making them very relatable.

Music-wise, the band provided the input for a trip down memory lane to the good ol’ times, when Grunge rock and flannel shirts were a thing. And if you closed your eyes, Michael’s voice carried certain elements reminding you of a guy called Eddie Vedder. INTO MY VAULT played a little longer than the obligatory thirty minutes and received warm applause from the audience.

Theory Of A Deadman

In the introduction I already mentioned the substantial in musical style, THEORY OF A DEADMAN have undergone with their latest album, which also - to the shock and awe of many fans - contained covers of STING’s ‘Shape of my Heart’ and MAJOR LAZER’s ‘Cold Water’. Music & Performance
Shortly after 9 pm, the lights went out and a piano intro started playing, during which the band members entered the stage. With the opener ‘Lowlife’, THEORY OF A DEADMAN alleviated any fears that they would completely break with their past. Also, the follow-up ‘Blow’ kept the crowd going and screaming for more. Singer Tyler Connolly seemingly enjoyed the small but intimate club atmosphere and did not fail to do his part in entertaining the crowd. He claimed responsibility for the unusually nice weather and demonstrated grinningly his indispensable German skills (“at which occasions do you say ‘Zeig mir Deine Titten’?”). For the fourth song, ‘Straight Jacket’, Tyler switched his guitar for the piano. He kept alternating between the two instruments, singer songwriter-style. Half way through the set, the band covered the all-time panty-moisturizer song ‘Wicked Game’ by Chris Isaak, which was greeted with euphoric cheers by the surprisingly young and female crowd.

After this, it was drummer Joey Dandeneau’s time to shine, as he entertained the people with a four-minute drum solo. This was the starting point to pick up the pace again with ‘Drown’ and bring out another all-time classic from the band’s song catalogue: ‘Bitch came back’, which ignited sing-a-longs among the fans. A two-song encore, with a short teaser of GUNS N’ ROSES ‘Paradise city’ in the middle, concluded the evening after a good 80 minutes of playtime, and everyone could leave the cosy Luxor with the incredibly good feeling of having witnessed a truly worthwhile club show.
