Schelmish

Only a handful of people came to the Kammgarn in the Cotton Club. Schelmish, the self constituted “fattest mediaeval band from Germany”, stopped in Kaiserslautern. About 200 fans were sitting or standing sporadic in  the Cotton Club and waited for the band. Dextro, Schelmish`s singer, welcomed the cotton club and told us, that the band still has too much alcohol in their veins from the day before.  But you don’t saw anything of that! On the contrary, Schelmish played on and had some surprises in the bags.

Music
At around 20:30, the audience peered to the stage which was covered in darkness and fog. You could see through the fog all kinds of mediaeval instruments on the stage. I was surprised directly from the beginning of the show by  the sound of those medieval instruments. Whatever they were playing - bagpipes, pipes, harps or drums clear and definite with deep basses - the sound was as good as usual in the Cotton Club. Through the multiplicity of the instruments you could hear as well chorals and solo voices. The set list was dominated by the songs of their latest album “Igni Gena” but also classics were belonging to the set of this evening. As an encore they played Jonny Cash´s “Ring of fire”.

Performance
At the beginning Dextro and the rest of the band started extremely fast and I had to fight with dark lights and a show which was sometimes to fast to take pictures. But that was so much better for dancing and partying. There wasn’t any time for rest during the show – they were changing instruments all the time, jumping and running on the stage. A highlight was the performance from Alea, which played together with Saltatio Mortis, and assisted the band while the one and the other song. A small “stripshow” from “Luzi Das L” couldn’t fail like an detailed band presentation. Altogether an absolutely felicitous evening, which remembered me to listen to my Schelmish CD´s at home.
