Paradise Lost, Orphaned Land and Society 1

Being a Paradise Lost Fan for 9 years now, I just couldn’t wait for their upcoming tour after the release of their 10th album, simply called “Paradise Lost”. Having a new drummer, Jeff Singer, who is not a stranger for rock fans as he has toured already with bands like “Megadeth”, “Helloween”, “Running Wild”, “Skylad” and more… let’s see what to expect. Paradise Lost had two support bands which I didn’t know before: Society 1 and Orphaned Land.

Society 1

Society 1 seemed to be a real crazy, wild, but also strange band. They want to be remarkable and want to shock. The first thing I have thought was: Hell, what is that?! But they are living their music and they really love what they do, you can see that. Singer Matt “The Lord” Zane, who produced already porno movies is always in the foreground. He was the first rockstar who performed in America live while suspended with hooks in his back. http://www.society1.net

Music
Loud, crazy and with passion - everyone in the band is governing his instrument, no doubt about that. For singer Matt it is possible to sing in different lows of his voice and during a song like ‘I love her’ he sounds like Peter Steele from Type O’Negative. Also bass player ‘Dirt’ is singing, but his voice sounds real deep and evil. Their music style is somewhere between Death Metal and Industrial.

Performance
They look evil, they are wild. They want to shock. Singer Matt is coming with a bottle of whiskey on stage. He is jumping and moshing with his long black hair most of the time and is doing despicable moves. They contact the crowd during their whole show. Asking if they are doing fine, shaking hands, stick one’s tongue out at someone and so on. Once Matt was jumping down from stage and singing in front of two girls in the first row and they were just smiling very shy and looking at each other, didn’t know what to do. Every band member is wearing make up, which makes them look still more dangerous. All in all they are very good entertainer.

Orphaned Land

Much closer to the Paradise Lost sound was the second band Orphaned Land. I’m sure not many people have heard Metal from Israel before. This was confirmed when Singer Kobi asked the crowd: ‘Is it the first time you hear a metal band form Isreal?’ Though they have already four albums released. http://www.orphaned-land.com

Music
They are playing Death Metal with Middle Eastern elements. The bandmembers are describing their music as followed: “It gets a colorful mixture of cultures and a journey around the world, it is a meeting of east & west, past & present, light & darkness, and a tango between God and Satan.” The songs are in English and Hebrew. Singer Kobi was supported by keyboarder Eden Rabin and replacement guitarist Tal Behar, who are singing as well. Some of their songs are very long, but not boring. Their sound is exotic and powerful. Songs like “Norra el Norra" or “Halo Dies” you will remember for sure. The crowd liked their music at once so the guys had a warm welcome in Bochum. The people were so enthusiastic, that they were shouting at the end of the show “We want more”.

Performance
There was just a simple performance. Orphaned Land impressed more with their music. Singer Kobi comes on stage with a jabella, which makes him look like Jesus himself. They wanted to see the people clapping their hands and were asking regulary if everyone has a good time. With 45 minutes their performance was much too short.

Paradise Lost

At 21.30h the intro with the melody of ‘Don’t Belong’ opened the Paradise Lost show. I was wondering that the people didn’t screame or shoute very much when the guys entered the stage. Was nobody happy to see them? It was so good to see guitarist Greg Mackintosh in action and best health again because in February he was in hospital after an appendicitis and inflamed abdominal wall. The supporting dates for the Judas Priest tour had to be cancelled, but now for the headline tour he was luckily recovered. http://www.paradiselost.co.uk

Music
The sound was loud and the voice of singer Nick Holmes wasn’t always at his best. But this wasn’t his fault. The setlist wasn’t a real surprise, they played 9 songs from the new album and when you have followed Paradise Lost in the last years, you have heard the other songs already live before. The oldest song was ‘As I die’, which was welcome to everyone! People were shouting their wishes, songs they wanted to hear, but most of them, weren’t played like ‘Pity the Sadness’, or ‘Paradise Lost’. Most of their fans still want to hear older stuff, songs from the first 3 albums. But nevertheless there was a great mood and the people were rocking and banging and everyone seemed to have a good time. And the people enjoyed to hear the new stuff live. The band is a perfect team and also new drummer Jeff is brilliant and playing as he was always in this band. The new thing is that Nick is singing alone now. In the past, Lee Morris (their last drummer) was singing the second voice. Greg Mackintosh was playing his parts full of energy and sensitive. Everyone around me agreed with 19 songs the gig was much too short!

Performance
Paradise Lost never had a “show” on stage. It’s the music that counts. I'm always wondering how Nick can be standing still on stage. He isn't moving a lot. Don't get me wrong, I don't want him to dance! The others are banging a lot or jumping. And I just can’t stand still when I hear their music. Nick didn’t introduce every song. But he showed his dry sense of humour, when he said: “This next song is for all the dark metal guys – this is ‘So Much Is Lost’”. It seemed the guys enjoyed the rocking crowd. Jeff often stood behind his drums and wanted to see the people clapping their hands. Greg, one of the two men with long hair, is moshing during every song and there are just seconds when you see his face. The atmophere were fantastic and it could have been going on for hours.
