Holle Bolle Gijs, Schoonhoven, The Netherlands
December 10th 2005
TBC, De Woanzin, Nuestros Derechos

On a cold and freezing night in Schoonhoven a large group of friends, some of the usual bar visitors and an other group of young people gathered in the Holle Bolle Gijs café. There was no stage, the bands were playing at one side and the audience was on the other side of the café. The lighting was provided by Christmas lights and they brought all their own equipment. No thanks to the circumstances it was a great and crazy night with great performances.

Nuestros Derechos

After seeing this band several times just for fun this was the first time I was going to write about them. It made me look at them differently and actually made me appreciate them more. The same goes for TBC (haven’t seen De Woanzin that often yet).

Music
Nuestros Derechos presents you with fast grunting/singing and short songs with some great guitar work. Jeroen (guitar) takes care of the more grunting vocals as for the other vocalist (and bass player) singing has more of a screaming sound in it. Some songs start out slow and tragic, such as ‘De Strop’ but they all blast off at one point and the speed returns to the song. At times both singers sing together and their voices make a good combination.

Performance
The performance starts with a thank you for their last performance, when all electricity was down because of all the power that was needed. Then they were off to a fast start, and kept this tempo up till the last song. Their drummer was beating his drums with all his effort. People immediately start head banging in the front. After the fourth song the snare drum broke, but luckily they could borrow one from the other bands and continue their show. There is great interaction with the audience, jokes are made and the audience is really part of the show. They have even thanked the Schoonhoven crew on their album.

De Woanzin

This band from Utrecht has recently released a split album with Nuestros Derechos which will be presented on the23rd of December in the Acu in Utrecht. So go check it out!

Music
If you don’t know the lyrics don’t try to understand them because it is a mission impossible. The lyrics are spat out full of aggression and energy which the microphone did not always seem to be able to handle. Instead of the vocals the guitars are responsible for the melody in their songs. Speed and energy are the leading word for this music. Not only their won vocalists were singing, Jeroen from Nuestros Derechos and even a member of the audience got to join in (whom they wanted to take home afterwards).

Performance
Their drummer was in the dark, behind the rest of the band; two guitarists, a bass player and two singers whom are on the loose with their loose microphones. And when I say on the loose I mean the real deal, they were rolling on the floor with the audience, they were as much a part of the mosh pit as everybody else. There is no line between stage and audience, everything is one big party. One of the singers was even carried around the bar by the audience, a smaller version of crowdsurfing!

TBC

Then it was time for the final band of this fun and crazy evening, TBC! This band was very familiar with the audience and everybody was excited to see them again.

Music
As of the first tunes the energy and music were flowing fast. Jeroen (vocals) was hard to understand, but his lyrics were spat out with such energy and passion it didn’t matter at all, you could feel his intentions. Together Jeroen and Jeroen (guitar, also form Nuestros Derechos) sound great, unfortunately the microphones couldn’t handle it at all times and there was some disturbance in the sound. The guitar took care of a cheerful, swinging melody during the songs even though this is definitely music to go wild too. We were presented with a long set list of songs which are all quite short and end abruptly. At one point during the show a member of the audience, Wouter, got to join in and sing along. They have done this before but is always a pleasant surprise. With a simple nod Jeroen asks him to join in and he does, adding even more to the intimate atmosphere of this performance.

Performance
Luckily the drummer did have some light during this performance; you could see him give his all. The audience (and stage) was one big mosh pit and everybody was enjoying themselves. There were even people diving off a platform in the café. Jeroen is a singer who won’t stand still, on stage he is moving like a wild animal. Bent over, almost eating his microphone and full of aggression. Both guitarists are relaxed but they were both fully concentrated. All in all it was a blast for both band and audience.
