1st April 2011
Phillip Boa & The Voodooclub, Sasu

No, it’s not been an April fool’s joke. PHILLIP BOA & THE VOODOOCLUB were actually going to play at Zeche in Bochum this evening to honour the just re-released and re-mastered albums ‘Helios’ and ‘Boaphenia’ with a few exclusive showcases, where both albums were presented in full length.

Sasu

Originally SASU was formed in 1999 as a Dark Punk trio by front man Tyrone together with Drummer Norb van Boyken and bassist Dan. Ten years later, SASU was reinvented and became the four-piece line up it always wanted to be, and a soulful Alternative Pop outfit with a smack of glam and hidden humility instead of the Punk of the band’s early days. SASU refuse categories at all, though they're influenced by Indie Rock and Pop culture in general. The band cites The Cure, David Bowie, Jesus and Mary Chain, New Order, Radiohead, Nick Cave, and lust but not least PHILLIP BOA himself as their major influences. German Indie / Rock band SASU is Tyrone (vocals), Pat (guitar, vocals), Rob (bass-guitar), and Norb van Boyken (drums). http://www.sasuworld.com / http://www.facebook.com/sasuofficial

Music & Performance
SASU have been support to PHILLIP BOA before already and managed to win over quite a few people. They kicked off their set soon wherein singer Tyrone would wander around on stage, sometimes or and other times less eccentric, not communicating much at all. The track starting it all, named ‘Hold On’ displayed the varied stylistic influences of the band pretty clearly with a slice of Post Punk added to a meld of Indie Rock and Goth which appealed to me a lot. For the next song an acoustic guitar was utilized as well, adding a bit of calmness to the track. In the further course Tyrone did it like a punk would probably do it in throwing the microphone to the ground and just leaving without a word, coming back for the next song though. Their music certainly not being the most danceable ever heard it was all the more astonishing some people got moving to the songs after all. After about 30 minutes the set was done and under a warm applause they left.

Phillip Boa & The Voodooclub

There are not many German Indie artists who enjoy such a high international reputation like PHILLIP BOA. His music is swinging between the poles of Pop and Avant-garde and is influenced by the punk movement end of the 70s. The lyrics are full of great, different metaphors and twists. This combination brought forth milestones like ‘Hair’ or ‘Copperfield’ and now about 2.5 years after ‘Faking to blend in’ with ‘Diamonds Fall’ came an album showing a different side to Boa’s music, almost coming across as a soundtrack at times. 2011 has already seen the re-release of two of the earlier albums ‘Helios’ and ‘Boaphenia’. Rumours have it a new album will be released this year as well. http://www.phillipboa.de / http://www.facebook.com/phillipboaandthevoodooclub

Music & Performance
An evening dedicated to ‘Helios’ and ‘Boaphenia’ it was. The rebuilding break to the performance was used by many to grab a beer and chat before the lights went down and the first band members appeared with the master entering as last one in line under excited screams of the crowd to start the set with ‘Utopia’. While Boa himself did some expressive moves up on stage you couldn’t say the same about the audience, regardless of the euphoric mood in the venue. There were quite a few people dancing, but not as ecstatic as I’d have expected if I’m honest. The following ‘Life After Being A Zombie’ then seemed pretty fitting to me, just that many didn’t rid of their zombie behaviour here. The action on stage, especially the vibrant drumming, was far more captivating for that matter. The upbeat mania found its end on ‘Pretty Bay’, a song drenched in melancholy. Seemed like Boa just safe some energies for the next burst of wild gestures to join in the dance on the grave.

He would leave the stage soon to Pia Lund who beautifully added her vocals to ‘Puppets On A String’ while he was treating the percussions. Once ‘Bohemian Cracker’ hit the crowd all the tedious attitude was blown away in an instant and even a little moshpit formed in the middle while others were sticking to just screaming the anthemic chorus along ta the top of their voices. A proper ending to the main set was given with ‘Euphoria’ but clear as crystal the club and Boa had to come back to play a few more songs, starting in a serene fashion with ‘Mary Rose’ before with ‘Love On Sale’ , a song followed that definitely everyone knew to ‘Get Terminated’ immediately afterwards. With another encore the show got wrapped up completely and lots of happy faces either left or stayed for the party.
