rogerwaters05SK “Olimpiyski”, Moscow, Russia
23rd April 2011
Roger Waters

ROGER WATERS, the musician of genius and founding member of legendary PINK FLOYD, came to Moscow in order to destroy the new “Wall” on the stage of SK “Olimpiyski”. The concert première of album “The Wall” took place 30 years ago and already at that time the album was considered to be almost the most outstanding show in the history of rock music. The transformation of “The Wall” from the 20th to the 21st century occurred about a year ago when Roger gathered a new group of talented musicians and started a new tour…

There are some apprehensions that this “The Wall” tour may be the final one, so any chance to see the epic performance could be regarded as a fulfilled wish, an opportunity to go back to the future or a rogerwaters01magical re-creation. Well, it’s really hard to express everything by means of words. Every scene of “The Wall” is an urge of the author to make the audience really feel. Not just joy or aesthetic pleasure that we used to feel from concert to concert but different, complicated feelings such as pain, anxiety, sympathy, condolence, indignation, a call to struggle. The abundance of dramatics and the symbolism of every change of the scenery strike one’s imagination. 30 years ago “The Wall” seemed to be a grandiose project, but now with the appearance of new powerful sound and light effects it seems that the project was created to live here and now.

The giant dolls impress, the helicopters, searchlights of which dash about the hall looking for someone or something, make your blood curdle. You hardly be able to experience something of the kind at any other concert. At the epoch of 3D, “The Wall” is close to the audience as never before: it surrounds and absorbs everyone. The dimensions and incredibility of the show amaze: the choir of children who wore “Fear Builds Walls” t-shirts, the doll of a spiteful teacher, lists of the fallen from various wars, photos of soldiers and refugees regard depression as a genre of art. All this makes your heart ache and sends a shiver down your spine. Unfortunately we don’t have pictures this time. Of course, there was a chance to jostle in the photo pit and to leave the venue after the 6th song with other photographers, missing the rest of the show yet it’s a long story why we didn’t use it. But on the other hand, let’s call it a challenge to your imagination.

The concert consists of two parts as the album itself. With each new composition of rogerwaters04the first part the wall was growing brick by brick and with the finale of ‘Goodbye Cruel World’ it closed down separating WATERS from the audience. The second part of the show started with melodic ‘Hey You’ which became the beginning of the wall collapsing. From one song to another the 75-meter giant was losing its ground and more and more pieces of the wall were devoured by the dark. There already was a kaleidoscope of severe parodies to iTunes, iPhones etc. like “iProtect”, “iFollow”, “iPay”, a march of hammers and calls to come to one’s senses. But only ‘Outside the Wall’ finished the whole thing accompanied by the storm of applause of the audience. “The Wall” is a unique show filled with a deep meaning and impregnated with the spirit of George Orwell and his “1984”, a show so close to the reality scares. And if you haven’t seen it yet, hurry up! It’s worth it. http://www.roger-waters.com/ / http://www.myspace.com/georgerogerwaters
