Festhalle Durlach, Karlsruhe, Germany
4th May 2006
Schandmaul & Regicide

‘Schandmaul’ released their last album ‘Mit Leib und Seele’only a few weeks ago. Now they are on tour telling their stories. Karlsruhe has always been a good station for ‘Schandmaul’. Their last concert in the Substage has been sold out and so they are now playing in the Festhalle which is quite bigger. Already the opener Regicide hit on an almost full hall.

Regicide

In December 2000 Regicide made their first demo-single ‘Hazy Contours’. Followed by two demo-CDs they released their first full-time album ‘Viorus’ in August 2004. Since then they convinced a big fan-crowd and supported bands like ‘Uriah Heep’ and ‘Schandmaul’. In February they released their last album ‘Break the silence’.

Music
Especially the older song ‘Viorus’ and the new one ‘Break the silence’ were celebrated by the crowd and people already upraised their hands. Only ‘An embracing space’, which is for the live application a little bit too long, disturbed the harmonious experience. Because Regicide denied the support for ‘Schandmaul’ already in the past, they had own followers and co-singers in the audience. There was no danger getting drowned as a support act.

Performance
The pleasant band from Oldenburg fought during their whole appearance against the usual sound problems of the Festhalle. We cannot say whether the vocal problems of Timo and Frauke (the two singers) are to be led back on these sound faults or rather on the frosty appearance at the Mystic festival during last weekend. Nevertheless, certainly they mobilized a good part of the ‘Schandmaul’ fans and moved them into party mood.

Schandmaul

Because of the nearly sold-out venue and the pre-summery dream temperatures the Festhalle changed during the rebuilding break into the usual witch's kettle and with the first sounds of the newer instrumental piece ‘Das Mädchen und der Tod’ the air burned. Then heated up and obviously expectantly ‘Schandmaul’ started the concert.

Music
As we had expected nearly all pieces of the new album ‘Mit Leib und Seele’ were played. The special song ‘Sichelmond’ was offered in a long extended version and found active reminiscence. ‘Schandmaul’ are not only folk-rockers, they are storytellers. They are telling fairy-tales about kings and dragons, about witches and lovers. We saw ‘Schandmaul’ five times in 2005, but this has surely been their best concert since we got to know them.

Performance
We realized a much more dynamic adjustment already on the album, but they showed this even more intensely on stage. Although the fans could not sing a long every new song, the ground still shook with almost every song. The up-growing heat was hard to stand. Then the peak was reached naturally with ‘Teufelsweib’, "Walpurgisnacht" and wildly famed ‘Herren der Winde’. In addition, ‘Schandmaul’ arouse enthusiasm also with the quiet tones. ‘Dein Anblick’ is used as a departure for the band as several times before while the audience is still singing. The song ‘Sonnenstrahl’ formed a successful end of this evening and brought everyone down again, so they were happily on their way home through a nice night in spring.
