Album Review

The newest creation of quite venerable band THE WATERBOYS, entitled ‘An Appointment with Mr. Yeats’, really gives a chance to get more acquainted with the works of W. B. Yeats, Irish poet and playwright. So his poems were set to music by Mike Scott, the mastermind of the band. The album starts very slowly or it’s better to say queer: at the beginning I couldn’t understand what was wrong with the speaker because the opening piece played for a long time but there was no sound. But actually the song just needed some time to gain speed, strength and get that deep, leisured, a bit dark atmosphere which takes an unprepared listener by surprise. But then the gloom changes into lyricism, some romanticism of ‘Song of Wandering Aengus’. Actually the atmosphere and the expressiveness are maybe the main advantages of the album.

Judging by the titles of the compositions such as ‘News for the Delphic Oracle’ or ‘The Faery’s Last Song’ it’s getting obvious that there’s a certain slant to mythology however the lyrics touches different subjects. All the songs are simple and accessible but still they produce a fairly good impression. Even listening to the 14th track I didn’t feel any boredom or tiredness. As for the best tracks, it’s hard to choose them out of such a variety yet ‘Sweet Dancer’ attracts with its lightness while ‘White Birds’ carries a shade of melancholy. In general the release is impressive, vivid or just great and may interest a large circle of music lovers.
