Album Review

Thrash Metal outfit VENDETTA was thought to be a goner after their hiatus in the late 80s, but they reunited in 2002 and quickly got back in gear with a new studio album in 2007. It was old school and heavy, but didn’t quite appeal to the critics, so now they’re trying again with ‘Feed The Extermination’. Unfortunately, the album seems to still run into the same problems as their last effort did. Still focused on a gritty, rather stripped down, but catchy sound, fans should expect harsh, distorted chugging mixed with shredding solos every once in a while, but sometimes the distortion covers them up too. So what is left to focus on? Pretty much there is just the chugging and the vocals which sound like a cross between Power Metal singing and Thrash Metal snarling, which pretty much leaves it sounding like vocal work from a band like ACCEPT. Take ‘Feed The Extermination’ for example. It is extremely catchy as far as the rhythms go, but vocally it can be a hit or miss, and the lyrics are often a bit generic or juvenile compared to other bands like GENERATION KILL which still perform the same kind of gritty, catchy tones but write more relevant lyrics. ‘Ovulation Bitch’ will probably come off as offensive rather than laughable even though it features one of the heaviest sections on the album altogether.

‘Storage Of Anger’ is one of the catchier songs, featuring the right level of riffs so it doesn’t sound like a squealing and hissing fest while retaining hard hitting hooks that will keep listeners interested. ‘De-Organ-Izer’ is rather basic in its chugs, but features excellent anthem power and thundering drumming that could make this an easy concert staple. ‘Abuse’ finally features some single string melodies as opposed to just distorted chugging and builds up atmosphere; if only the album had opened with this to make it a stronger effort. ‘Til I’m Dead’ features more juvenile lyrics but the combination of “group choruses” adds for a better effect with the slow, almost trudging pace of the guitars as they chug along in their rather stripped down form. Overall, most versatile Thrash fans will say they’ve heard more intriguing, but those who like old school, basic guitar, drum, and vocal music without a strong focus on lyrics/ concept or atmosphere and just want something to mosh to with rhythm, then ‘Feed The Extermination’ is just the right album for that. VENDETTA still knows how to show their listeners a heavy time after so many years.
