Album Review

It’s 13 years ago that the first instalment of the Septic compilation series was released. The aim was to provide a collection of electronic music not only from various genres but out of the ordinary. They did pretty well, I’d say. Two days ago ‘Septic X’ was put out and places a massive track right at its beginning with SKOLD’s ‘Suck’ in a rendition of FLA. It bears resemblances to industrial, just as it does link to punk all injected with a slight doze of melancholia. REDICAL G and ‘Lucifer’ are going to make your bodies twitch on the dance floor. Straight to the point and hypnotic. Thumbs up!! Grandmasters of industrial rock KMFDM are up next with ‘Go To Hell’. Other this one comes across cold and distant at first before the guitars come in to rip apart everything. While we’re still waiting for the first EDGE OF DAWN Live show to happen the duo keeps coming around with new material regularly. Newest member of the family: ‘Red Bank’, a scattered rhythm oscillates under a rapid fire of shifting perspectives and ambiguous phrases. Won’t be the last we’ve heard of Frank Spinath on Septic, but we’ll get to that soon enough.

First we’re tugged down into the mud with DISMANTLED and ‘Disease’ which is really creeping me out. The consequence and vigour the lyrics come out here is downright frightening. The music blends just in keeping a gritty and rough attitude throughout. If somebody told me that LEGACY OF MUSIC’s ‘Tragedy’ was a MESH track I wouldn’t have a single doubt that’s true. A nearly flawless ballad; the only drawback being the effects on the vocals close to the end! A no-go! I was caught in by the track with the first beat of the drum. ‘Epitaph [V2]’ by ANGELS OF ACID an edgy industrial track with a singular atmosphere and whispered vocals rarely to be seen these days. Now we’re going for Frank Spinath’s second round. This time it’s GHOST & WRITER with a track called ‘Gambit’. Less rough than previous tracks and dreamy in atmosphere with an ace chorus that just gives you goose bumps every time! Jan DeWulf has a new DISKONNEKTED track for us next. ‘Yesteryears’ incorporates melodic guitar work, adding a memorable note to the song’s intriguing feel.

Let’s hope ‘Hotel Existence’ is coming out real soon. ‘No More Hollow Doors’ closes the disc with a mechanical feast of electronic minimalism and noise. ‘Septic’ has always been the one comp giving just little to criticize. I could’ve done without IMPERATIVE REACTION or VOLT 9000. Just not my thing but there’s no arguing about the overall quality of the tenth part.
