Album Review

2001, VELVET CUT started as a solo project by singer Tomi Asuintupa and developed within this time a style that reminds one of a cross between NIN, PLACEBO, IAMX… Although on further releases the project grew up to a full band, their newest release leaves no doubt, that Tomi is responsible for all the songwriting and composing… even for the recording the other guys were not required, so that their part is nothing more than to perform Tomi´s ideas live.

Unfortunately, the material presented on ‘Electric Tree’ is without a chance to reach the quality of those bands named in the beginning. The problem is that all of the diversified musical parts the songs of VELVET CUT are relying on seem to be more than overdosed. It’s always too much of everything, so that in my opinion the audience struggles to get really into the stuff. It’s a pity, because there’s definitely a potential slumbering under the surface. Maybe it would be wiser to include the other musicians in the creative process of composing… sometimes that´s the piece of creativity a new release needs to be separated from the mean…
