Album Review

After nearly a year of self-release, VORE’s third (and most delayed album to date) finally sees release for Metal fans worldwide on AFM Records. A collection of rather grinding, yet catchy Death Metal tracks, ‘Gravehammer’ follows in the footsteps of mid era IMMOLATION and even a bit of Death n’ Roll from SIX FEET UNDER. Combined, it creates a groovy album that is ferocious but not repetitive with a slightly fuzzed out sound, but not enough to make it seem like demo quality. Like groups such as INCANTATION, VORE likes to stick with epic formulas in their music. Lengthy tracks like ‘Doomwhore’ feature pulsing rhythms with a focus on the drums in smattering bursts, and even the chugging interludes have a certain Death n’ Roll vibe which are perfect without the vocals for the moment, though the vocals have that low guttural rasp that definitely helps make the music. Even the short tracks like ‘Urobos’ in their acoustic nature help give pause to the album and help break up the rocky ride.

Other highlights include the group vocals- muddled and hazy like a thousand death roars at once- on ‘The Claw Is The Law’. Never mind the cheesy title; it is one of the better tracks to head bang to. One things listeners will notice is that the album is not very fast; more so it crawls in its monolithic nature that would steamroll via tank rather than splatter with a formula one racer. Only on ‘Sacerdotum Tyrannis’ will listeners really notice a pick-up in pace, but it does not wield the momentum that a CANNIBAL CORPSE album would. At the same time, this rather relaxed pace throughout the album really allows listeners to hear the groove elements of the music and lets them enjoy it, rather than be blown away by its technicality. This may not be the most complex Death Metal offering, but ‘Gravehammer’ tells epic stories in deep growls and rather simple riffs that are still catchy in a way that IROM MAIDEN does with their Power Metal ballads. For those who like their Death Metal with a bit of mysticism to it in the lyrics and a sound that is monumental in the way that DISMA sounds, then they will certainly like this.
