Album Review

WRECKDANCE was born from the ashes of SURUAIKA (1997-2007) in Tampere, the self-proclaimed Goth capital of Finland. On their website, the band enlists a number of classic gothic rock and Post Punk bands as their inspiration, but after several years of playing together, they have developed their own flavour instead of merely recycling the tried-and-true sound of the canonic bands.

'Terminated', with its angular guitar melodies and energetic vocals, does terrific work as the opener of the album. Along with the title track, it is one of the most imminently appealing pieces on 'Love is Murder'. However, my favourite is perhaps 'Black Smoke' which, together with 'Midnight in Hospice' and the closing track 'Wreckdance' echoes influences of progressive rock.

Personally, I find the album's weakest point to be the lyrics, which wander the well-trodden graveyard path. It is a pity, as the music itself is far from generic. That aside, 'Love Is Murder' is an excellent debut. It is not your average gloomy gothic album - instead of dwelling in depression, it directs the anguish outwards. WRECKDANCE resembles more the unlikely bastard child of BLACK SABBATH and THE BIRTHDAY PARTY than yet another THE SISTERS OF MERCY clone.
