Album Review

Musicians behind VANITY have its origin in Switzerland, Palestine and Italy; now, the whole band lives in Italy. The debut album ‘Occult You’ was first self-released a while ago but now is spreading wider by the release via Church Independent label. To describe the band is not so easy, the origin of the melted components is varied and the sound is with great immediacy and impact, but still elusive and hard to classify. If you want to compare VANITY, maybe their idols JOY DIVISION or BAUHAUS are the best bands to name, since the band is playing classic Goth Rock in the best sense of words. On the musical base, the voice of singer N is quite extraordinary since high pitched.

VANITY are playing Rock in classic song form with a retro style, but still post-modern, not Wave or Metal, not Indie or Post Punk, but still anything of that. The band is not only using elements from good ol’ Goth Rock, but also look further for other elements, like technoid cols sounds in the beginning of ‘Time's New Romance’, reminding a lot of the 80s, while the band sounds heavy and with a little Metal influence in the gloomy ‘Sun’. ‘Occult You’ is an album, that surely will impress people understanding the original sense behind Wave or Post Punk. The dreamy title track of the album uses old-school synthesizer motifs and sounds quite hypnotic.

To sum it up, you’ll find echoes of Gothic Rock, Post-Punk, Doom, Metal or Electronics and Synth Pop, resulting in a shapeless mix of sounds.
