Album Review

“The wisdom of the crowd is the process of taking into account the collective opinion of a group of individuals rather than a single expert to answer a question.” WISDOM OF CROWDS is also a collective expression of Bruce Soord from PINEAPPLE THIEF and Jonas Renkse from KATATONIA, a project that has recently yielded its self-titled debut album and hopefully not its last. It’s an interesting mixture of styles, there’s Indie Rock and later-day (or let’s call it post-Violator) DEPECHE MODE vibe, as I’ve more or less lost an interest in DM in that era, this aspect grated on me a little, but that’s a complain of taste - that particular (schizoid) fusion of keyboards and guitars will certainly be welcomed by other ears and seen as its strong rather than weak point.

The melancholy and slightly dreamy tone (mostly induced by Renkse’s vocals and its more progressive, that is Floyd-esque interludes) will also be at times accompanied by a more underground Dance music style, which means that at one hand the album invites introspection and on other hand signifies an upsurge of activity as a result, the intersection is quite interesting and compliments skills of Soord’s songwriting and Renkse’s suitability as its singer. The project & album titled song therefore is my clearest favourite due to its more dreamy and proggy nature with a nice hook and thoughtfulness encouraged and underlined by lyrics. What is yours going to be where your personal preferences lay. There’s plenty to find here in this diverse and charming album.
