Album Review

‘Dawn of the Brave’ is the fifth album of VAN CANTO, a German band that has put its bets on A Capella Metal. Let’s get the interesting tid bits out of the way: 200 of their fans took part in choir for this album and so they’ve at least sold the 200 copies for sure at the least. The artwork is united under a superhero concepts and it’s had Ronald Prent (MANOWAR, RAMMSTEIN) on sound mixing and Charlie Bauerfeind (BLIND GUARDIAN, HELLOWEEN etc.) producing the drum recordings. It’s not a surprise that they’re inspired by Melodic Power Metal because that’s what they turn the original songs into. Ever wondered what yet another cover of EUROPE’s ‘Final Countdown’ sounds like? Well, there’s been so many that may be you’re more in dread of it. It’s not bad and definitely the fan-fuelled choir is interesting, but considering all covers are turned over within the same style and approach you can say it’ll stand out for its anthemic and recognisable quality.

For the rest of the songs you’ll recognise the originals but they’ll soon sludge into one lukewarm whole where you really have to sharpen your ears not to be overpowered by the monotonous tack. I’d like to say that it was at least interesting, but I’d rather listen to APOCALYPTICA to hear Metal classics turned into new version with a more interesting and inventive approach within a different genre, or GREGORIAN. Even YouTube amateurs will give better takes. Or hearing the originals, they’ve just not turned them into something different and haven’t outshined them at all. Maybe if you’re really a massive fan of Epic Power Metal, this may please... for a few minutes, at least...
