Album Review

So let’s start with the negatives. To call yourself WEAK you either have to be deliberately and deliciously foppish and fey, or incredibly assertive and strong making the name, y’know, ironic. If neither, then it’s just a really crappy name. Things aren’t helped by the vocalist’s chosen rock ‘n roll name, which, should one check out the urban dictionary, is either knowingly gross and tacky, or just incredibly naive. Musically, this all tumbles somewhere into that broad category that’s been amazingly feeding itself endlessly since about 1985. There are bands who try and sound like THE SISTERS OF MERCY and think we won’t notice or care. And there are bands who say things like “Call them a kind of Sisters of Mercy on speed” in their press releases. WEAK are the latter. But let’s not call them THE SISTERS OF MERCY on speed. There’s nothing more daring going on here than a bit of night-nurse and maybe a few Paracetamol. Let’s just call them weak.

Continuing with the negatives, you have not heard the true horror of badly chosen and executed cover-versions until your ears flap in utter disbelief at the shudderingly bad MEN WITHOUT HATS hit ‘The Safety Dance’. It’s not even so bad it’s good. It’s just bad, bad, bad. Another unwise decision was choosing ‘Going Nowhere’ as a song title. It’s apt. It does indeed go nowhere. Further horrors are revealed on ‘Hellfire’. The nastily skittering percussion and standard rawk guitaring is irritating enough but when joined by the hilariously un-scary distorted vocals it descends into something altogether in a hell of its own making.

There are guitars here doing what guitars do, bits of predictable tumbling drum fills, clunky and clumpy clichéd Goth-rock dynamics, and vocals you’ve heard a thousand times in a thousand bands. There simply seems to be no possible need for ‘Dark Desires’ to exist, so charmless and lacking in any credibility is it. This type of dark and gothic rock, like any genre, has got to offer something new and original to be of any interest, or at least recreate the past in an energetic and intelligent way. But enough of the negativity. Let’s move onto what’s positive here. Yawn.
