Album Review
The well-known Advanced Electronics compilation series celebrates its 7th edition by now and the tried and tested basic recipe is carried on consistently.
It’s collecting a mixture of songs from completely different genres of the electronic music scene and put them together on one sampler. Among the artists you usually find well-established acts as well as fairly unknown ones or newcomers. But the first CD begins with a very well-known act: AGONOIZE and their dance-floor breaker ‘Schaufensterpuppenarsch’ - as usual, danceable, hard and uncompromising with - cautiously put - strange lyrics. Therefore GROßSTADTGEFLÜSTER bless us with a portion of chiefly minimalist electronic, good German lyrics and a little acoustic surprise. KLANGSTABIL come around the corner with a comparatively club-compatible variation of the ‘Math & Emotion’ opener, here with the name ‘The Square Root of Three’ yet it has the same chilly but emotionally-charged atmosphere as the original. The collaboration of Brian Molko with the project HOTEL PERSONA (One member is actually the PLACEBO bassist) results in a small piece philosophizing about the condition of today’s youth and their personal circumstances.
The sympathetic Swedes of AUTO-AUTO give a song named ‘Hastwerk’ from their current album ‘Celeste’, fresh, danceable and with multi-faceted melodies, it’s got everything it takes plus a very good singer (also live). In secret, a new PROJECT PITCHFORK song sneaked into the list. ‘If I Could’ is the name; the lyrics are dark and inscrutable while the rhythm section is well-elaborated keeping a mid-pace and is enriched with melodic layers. Nice but nothing special by PITCHFORK standards. The cult project DIE FORM placed its new single ‘Her(t)z Frequenz’ on the compilation. The track has a real deep bass line, relatively straight rhythms and the interaction of Mr. Fichot’s and Eliane’s vocals sounds excellent as always whereas Fichot’s voice is fairly clean this time. Let’s do a short excursion to the second CD now which is not that strong compared to the first one in my opinion. Some cool tracks definitely are ‘24/7 Mystery’ (BEBORN BETON) and ‘We stand alone’ (ULTIMA BLEEP); both representing the electro pop fraction, whereas the BEBORN BETON track is the more frisky one, while ‘We stand alone’ is fast, highly melodic and extremely catchy. A really surprising song comes with the CAT PEOPLE track ‘Tanya is in my Bed’, some kind of electronic / indie hybrid with casual post punk nods and melancholic vocals.
VOl.7 has a strong first and a - in my view - quite week second CD on which only a couple of tracks really stand out and that gets the whole rating down, but it’s in the nature of samplers that no one likes everything included on them some meet your tastes, some don’t just now it’s more than usual.
