Album Review

Young label Shinto Records founded at the beginning of 2008 offers with the ‘Sin-Tech’ compilation a bunch of exclusive tracks from artists of their roster as well as different contributions from other artists covering a broad spectrum of electronic music.

ANGELS ON ACID starts the compilation with a punch in the face titled ‘Vile’ included as Limbo Remix basing on a pounding array of rhythms intricately intermixed with guitar samplings and various effects while both distorted screams and lightly alienated chants add diversified vocal accents. Next one winding up is a live track of veterans and legendary KIRLIAN CAMERA. ‘Blue Room’ was originally released in 1985 but here can be heard in its 2002 incarnation with extraordinarily talented singer Elena Fossi delivering the vocals to the musical frame made of spherical synthesized strings and old-school sounding electronics. The Butterfly Remix of DIVERJE’S ‘Stitched’ radiates pure aggression with its insanely mutilated vocals and relentlessly assaulting rhythms encompassed with hovering melodies.

JASONALACITY’s ‘Winter Song’ is a harder-edged yet very melodic and emphatic electro tune showing as well that dance floor compatible music doesn’t necessarily have to be simple and one dimensional. ‘The Sheltering Sky’ by PHANTOMS OF THE SS is a disquieting journey through monotonous droning coupled with indefinable noises and eerie vocals that actually can’t come out of this world if you ask me. THE HIROSHIMA PROJECT provides a sad and for me unexpected end to the compilation with ‘From A Lonely Place’ a piano piece in minor smothering every happy thought you might had before it started. Progressing further ancient strings and pads are layered over the notes dragging you even deeper into its moods just to disappear at one point and leave it alone to the piano and field recordings to guide you to the track’s very end.

The range of this compilation covers experimental stuff just as hard-hitting blasts and emotive, very melodic tunes and therefore leaves nothing to be desired for fans of excellently crafted electronic music.
