Album Review

When it comes to Harsh Electro stuff, the German label Noitekk is probably the first stop for fans of that genre. The first round of the ‘United’ compilation series was issued by the label in 2005 already with the intention of showing the bandwidth of the genre and the own label roster and 2009 is the year which sees the continuation of the series with ‘United Vol.2’.

The Canadian duo DYM starts the compilation with their contribution ‘The Invilid’ which reminds me personally a lot of what FRACTURED celebrated on ‘Only Human Remains’. The track is excellently produced and steeped in glitches. With the new LIFE CRIED track ‘Forbidden’ it’s now getting a little more brachial with drums beating out your teeth and vocals stricken with hate. DIE SEKTOR’s ‘War Song’ rather relies on slower and rumbling drumming but is apart from that a rather typical part of its genre. DAWN OF ASHES put a big emphasis on the creation of piercing atmospheres on their track ‘Kill Life and Bury the Dead’ with an equal space occupied buy adrenaline increasing club beats. C-DRONE DEFECT builds up their song ‘Mundus vult decipi’ layer by layer first before starting to add vocals taking on a monstrous shape when passing through the chorus. ‘Everything I Have’ by PANIC LIFT delivers pulsing beats and driving sequencer loops. The track draws most of its dynamics from the seamless transition between very typical harsh electro elements like the all the way distorted voice, with soothing, emotive piano themes.

The compilation then ends with a sonic apocalypse conjured by ASLAN FACTION and named ‘Seventh Circle’ in an updated 2008 mix. This is indeed not the re-invention of the wheel but if you’re really addicted to the harsh electro genre then you won’t get around the sampler, I guess. My problem is that some tracks sound very similar due to certain sequences that keep re-appearing and drum sounds I’ve heard already years ago in other productions, however it’s not all bad and there are a few neat tracks to find on there.
