Album Review

The Dutch three-piece that named itself after a cat at their very first practice space already formed in 1994, but went on hiatus until 2001. The ‘Eat The Evidence’ EP from 2003 is their very first release. In 2004, with a journey to New York, started what would eventually result in their first album ’11-11’ which spawned two singles with ‘Dazzled Kids’ and ‘Whatever you Want from Life’. Following years of touring, supporting bands such as THE BRAVERY or JULIETTE & THE LICKS, the band went back into the studio to record their newest album called ‘A Tale of Two Devils’.

The album opener ‘High As An Amsterdam Tourist’ musically recalls for me the busy happenings in a city with people that are rushing around having no time anymore! Besides that, it’s a good track to start a party with its thumping beats, and is that really a banjo I’m hearing in there? The second track ‘Feel Like A Rocket’ starts out as a clean Indie tune. The introduction then leads over to a trumpet section that also enhances several other parts of the track with an exciting nuance. A “Uuuh Uhuuhuu” choir introduces us to the next track ‘A Year And A Bit’ which in its progress offers multi-faceted percussion and sounds like the marriage of an Indie guy with the Princess of a South Pacific tribe, metaphorically speaking. ‘Second Blow’ is a very melancholic offering. Underlined by minor strings and electronic drums it’s crawling right under the skin.

’A Tale Of Two Devils’ mingles a traditional Indie sound with a string of diversified influences and thus, is an album that stands out of the genre releases people are flooded with these days.
