Album Review

WAVES UNDER WATER was formed in 2007 in Stockholm, Sweden. The band consists of Angelica Segerbäck on vocals, Johan Svärdshammar on synth, chorus and composing and Rickard Kretschmer on drums. The band plays Dark Wave with a strong slant into electronic music. The songs of the trio, filled with the notes of dark romanticism and inspired by the wild nature of the north allow a listener to sink into the ethereal atmosphere of dreams and illusions. Despite such potential, the band had to wait for almost two years to present the debut album to the audience.

’Serpents and the Tree’ turned out to be very expressive, full of fire and emotions. But that fire is not a raging flame, but the light of a candle bright enough to disperse shadows of semidarkness. The serene music gives an opportunity to plunge into melancholic thoughts. Each song is perceived like a complete independent composition but the album has its inner logic, based mostly on the emotional impression produced by the tracks. The band was able to weave a “web” of the album so harmoniously that it’s impossible to get out till the very last second. The tracks ‘My Cup’ and ‘Summerland’ lure, with their light, uncomplicated melodies into a world of unstable fantasies. Then there comes the song ‘Serpents and the Tree’ in which the tension, gradually growing during the first part of the disc, reaches its apogee, yet not even tries to weaken its positions. ‘Dead Leaves’, ‘Winter Garden’ and ‘I am the Ocean’ lead you, past sleeping trees and pale shadows, away to the realm of the elements.

Now I should make a conclusion though. So, in time WAVES UNDER WATER can achieve success taking into account such a good material of the debut album. Listening to ‘Serpents and the Tree’, you can escape out of the reality for some time while your imagination creates pictures of enigmatic worlds you’ve never seen before.
