Album Review

The popular and innovative Septic compilation by Dependent Records made it up to 7 parts before the label closed-down and quite frankly I thought this was it. Then, in 2009 Dependent unexpectedly rose from its ashes announcing new releases as well. Amongst them a new part of the compilation series that once again collects quality electronic music from various genres on a single disc.

The opener of the collection ‘Do you feel the same’ is brought to us by the bustling, young Swedes of NECRO FACILITY and they cater for a hot start mixing classic EBM influences with modern electronics creating a high-octane track you have to dance to. MESH are giving us a rough preview on their upcoming album ‘A Perfect Solution’ with ‘Who Says?’, a rocking, electronic vocal duet of Mark Hockings with an unknown female. With APPARAT comes a new name with a track called 'Arcadis', having such spacey melodies you can fly away on them atop eclectic, contemporary electronic rhythms with an 80s twist. You hear the first seconds and you instantly now that this is an EDGE OF DAWN track. Love it when bands have some trademarks in their sound while not forgetting to incorporate new elements like they do with the very powerful, danceable ‘Stage Fright’. One hell of a track and more than a worthy appetizer for the upcoming second album!

The new VELVET ACID CHRIST album is supposed to be different. Well, ‘Black Rainbows’ proves just that. Reverberating acoustic guitars meet a monotonously progressing rhythm meet clean vocals by Brian Erickson. It puts one in mind of some of his very early material that sounded a lot like THE CURE. Anyway, I like the track and I’m looking forward the album already. We’re closing off here with a really recommendable artist called FIX8:SED8 who deserves more attention. Sometimes I would wish more electro projects would sound like this. This style is very reminiscent of the old days when more musicians still placed value on a decent arrangement like on this intriguing, atmospheric down-tempo track. I may not have mentioned everything but that’s because there’s plenty of great stuff on this compilation and I had to make a choice. It’s my personal favourite of the series. Be sure to check it out.
