Album Review
Formed in 2004, the German project VIA OBSCURA, consisting of Anne, Alexander and André, now releases a full length album named ‘Traum’. According to the album title, VIA OBSCURA focuses on a surreal world with emotional and melancholic thoughts. Striking titles such as ‘Grau’, ‘Stille’ and ‘Winter’ underline this image. The music is atmospheric and slow with elements of powerful rock sounds. The opener ‘Sie’ makes clear that this long-player will not make you dance but rather to dream. From my point of view, the post-apocalyptic vision full of luminous, multi-layered sounds, that move from the surreal, fractured and dreamlike to something more structured match to the autumn months.
It could be listened while you having a breakfast to have a smooth start into the day. It acts against the typical cliché of the combination from high female and rough male voice. You only notice the high, clear voice of Anne S. Her voice is smooth and bright - underlining the quiet melodies. Furthermore, I want to highlight the lyrics. They are well understandable and the voice of Anne doesn’t seem to be annoying - although I don't prefer female voices. But I have to admit that after listening to the album a few times, you might say there's no change. The songs are monotone and less recognition value. Well the band got potential - they only have to recover a certain relief.
