Album Review

Not only is ‘Emerging Organisms Vol.3’ the third part of an acclaimed and successful compilation series. It also marks the beginning of the third year of Chicago-based electronic music label Tympanik Audio, who exposed many of us to talents such as SUBHEIM, AUTOCLAV1.1 or DISHARMONY to name just a few and expanded our musical scopes. The third issue is packed again with lots of well-known but also unknown names.

A dull, mechanical quaking opens SE’s newest effort ‘Chrono’ swelling to a threatening melange of static noises that eventually lead to a sequence with drums sounding like a bomb is crashing into the ground in regular intervals with dramatic strings accompanying it. If you know the original ‘Beziehungsohr’ by KLANGSTABIL, you’ll hardly find any resemblance to the original in SUBHEIM’s rendition, which is as forceful as never before and additionally raises walls of monumental darkness around its rhythmic fundament. It’ll be interesting to see if any of this punch will re-appear in Kostas’ new tracks. If anything’s left of the original ‘Coal Cage’ in the ACCESS TO ARASAKA remix, I’d say it’s the break-beat, hyperactive rhythm chopping the atmospheric ceiling time and again. Otherwise I can’t hear any difference to an ATA track. S:CAGE with ‘Seven Endings (Departure)’ couple the ultimate feeling of having to let go of something precious to a noise-inflicted kaleidoscope of rumbling down-tempo beats.

I didn’t even know DISPLACER by the time ‘Sun_Phase’ came out first but contrary to his newest full-length release, it’s rather looking at the dark side of the moon than facing bright rays of sunlight. Light-flooded realms of bliss hint at a bright, moody adventure with the start of the 2nd CD with IP NEVA and ‘Calm Before The Storm’. In fact, that moment of peace is the prestage to the end. You’re being guided to the brink, shown what’s going to happen, but with the knowledge that there’s nothing you can do to prevent it. FAMINE is capable of making your ears bleed from the terror of Black Metal and brutal electronics if he wants to. ‘Sig/Int’ shows him working with measured rhythms but turning the complexity fader up to the maximum. It’s even more heating up the anticipation for ‘Natures Twin Tendencies’. If you ever wanted to know how playing drums with a few spoons and a wooden table, sampled and manipulated digitally sounds, ‘Rand VA is your track. This is truly a piece of amazing sound design.

The rhythms opening ‘Anna’, the final piece of this compilation, are trapped in a time loop and won’t show any significant sort of development until the track does an unexpected shift. But the real magic of ‘Anna’ happens above in the spheres of beautiful harp samplings, tumbling like dizzy through a haze of captured emotions which have taken on sonic shapes to captivate and mesmerize. Now, at the end, I seriously think this is the best one in the ‘Emerging Organisms’ series this far. It’ll be a tough task to beat part 3 with the next incarnation. But let’s wait and see. Tympanik always is good for a surprise.
