Album Review

Italian formation VITALES EXSEQUIAE was founded in 2007 but only in 2009 its line-up took the final shape and a bit later the first album ‘A Short Lived Hope’ appeared. In its music the band mostly combines doom, death and black metal diluting that mixture with some progressive elements and the debut work of the musicians fully demonstrates all the features of their style.

The album, total length of which is almost 30 minutes contains 4 extremely powerful and diverse tracks that produce a strong yet ambiguous impression. Each song can be perceived like a complete independent piece but on the other hand the CD definitely has its inner logic, organizing the compositions in a strict way. So already the first track ‘The Anatomy of Ineptitude’ helps a listener to get a general idea about the whole album: complicated melody, when rough guitars, solid drums and well-balanced sinuous keyboards create an atmospheric and vigorous line which is perfectly supplemented with the singer’s growling. Rare parts of the clean vocals and inclusions of the acoustic guitar are just intended to add some refined notes to the sonic picture.

Thus, ‘A Short Lived Hope’ turned out to be rather intricate and interesting but it’s better to listen to VITALES EXSEQUIAE’s creation only if you are in the mood for it because the tracks won’t go as mere background music nevertheless they will suit the taste of the fans of the genre.
