Album Review

VIOLENT DIVINE was formed in the late 2005, their self titled debut album ‘Violent Divine’ was released in 2006; it quickly got praise from both fans and critics. ‘Release the Hounds’ is the bands third album released on Swedmetal Records on the 11th March 2010.

VIOLENT DIVINE is a new band for me, I had not heard them before and so, I began listening to ‘Release the Hounds’ not knowing what to expect. Interesting to find an instrumental song as the first track on the album, it sounds like something from a movie and I like the sound and feeling of it before it quickly leads you on to ‘Welcome to the Divine’ that is a good introduction to the album. I enjoy hearing how the guitars and bass kind of growls along with the singer Mike’s voice during mostly the whole song, this creates a suggestive feeling.

‘Retribution’ opens up with cool drums; I really like the rhythm in this rougher song that carries on with growling guitars and bass to the some lighter sounding chorus. I like the lyrics and vocals in this song; it fits perfectly to the music. ‘One By One’ quickly became a favourite song; I love the energy and attitude in this one and I have trouble sitting still while listening to it! The song kicks off from the start with intense and good sounding drums, guitars and bass, add catchy chorus, good melody and lyrics and you have a brilliant song! Impressive to hear Mike sing faster as the song speeds up; his voice fits really well with the music.

‘Eternity’ is different and has a kind of laid back feeling, it starts with a calm intro before the song opens up with cool guitars and bass than get rougher and thunders along during the rest of the song in a way that I really like. This is a heavy and strong song that also is complex and interesting, I find myself liking it the more I listen to it. ‘This Heart is about to be Broken’ really took me by surprise! It’s slow and simple yet so special and beautiful; I like the contrast of this song to the rest of the songs on the album. Sadly I doubt that this one will ever make it to the live set list - but I would love to be surprised! I could in fact buy this album just to get my ears on this single song! I would like to hear more of this in the future, this is a road where this band could move further on and gain a lot.

Interesting how the more I listened to ‘Release the Hounds’ the harder it became to chose just a couple of songs to bring forth as the ones I liked best. I like the fact that this album manages to surprise me, the songs are different - they don’t sound the same and are in fact really interesting. I don’t know if I have ever enjoyed listening to the sound of growling guitars and bass this much before.
