Album Review

German formation WELTRAUM started in 1999 as a psychedelic jam band and after a lot of time and efforts, the line-up extended and the period of concerts began. At the same time, the musicians regularly record CDs and try to improve their performances. This year the band released two different albums which both contains five tracks. So one of the CDs, entitled ‘Feuer’ started with an opus that lasts over 20 minutes and can really blow up your brain.

At first the music seems to be interesting and captivating despite its comparative simplicity. The drums keep up the constant rhythm and later the musical palette broadens and the smooth melody is suffused with somewhat whistling and grinding sounds. The song is gradually getting more dynamic and emotional while new instruments are pulled into this strange phantasmagoria. The track excites one’s imagination and there appear African or American tribes with their ritual dances or a shaman summoning gods. But this psychedelic sonic madness doesn’t stop with the end of the composition but it smoothly flows into the following piece which may be considered as a continuation of the previous one yet the music becomes darker coming out of darkness and it feels like the process is everlasting.

However it is not and the next song carries a listener to the asphalt jungle full of noise of crowded streets and heavy traffic. ‘Astral Traveller’ reminds me a lot of the first composition but the final track turned out to be rather plain with calm melody and measured rhythm. In general the album is diverse and interesting enough but on the other hand such music is difficult to comprehend and is mostly oriented for a narrow circle of lovers of the style.
