Album Review

WELTRAUM creates music for over 10 years and it has already established a reputation as an interesting formation on the modern psychedelic rock scene. The newest release of the band that is called ‘Sweet Valentine’ immediately amazes with the variability of the material and at first produces a rather ambiguous impression. On one hand the album can be regarded as a quite advanced work with a plenty of good music ideas, on the other hand the songs are too complicated and full of incompatible parts. In the first track smoothness and tunefulness are often spoiled with firm, sharp inclusions that ruin the harmony of the composition but actually the music still manages to create an atmosphere of light melancholy. As the song proceeds the pauses are getting shorter and then they totally disappear so the sound fills the whole space.

The only track I’d like to mark out is ‘Fungusca Timewarp’ which pleases with its nice melody and comparative constancy of the music. The other songs look like enigmatic puzzles with a lot of extra parts yet they don’t seem to be complete anyway. Of course all of the compositions have their moments but in general the musicians overburdened the material a great deal and one listening won’t be enough to assess the advantages of the album but only devoted fans of the style will dare to listen to the CD again I’m afraid.
