Album Review

Nearly one year passed by ever since the release of Dependent’s last issue of the ‘Septic’ compilation series and, for what it’s worth, it was high time for the next one. ‘Septic IX’ will be released next week and holds 15 tracks in total. MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE open the comp with their manic punk attitude, enriched with a forceful electro treatment by COMBICHRIST, followed by a different angle on DISMANTLED’s ‘The Whore Inside Me’ by CLICKS who’ve surprised already with their track on the ‘Dependence 2010’ comp. The next two offerings, including a remix of EDGE OF DAWN’s ‘Stage Fright’ and the IMPERATIVE REACTION song ‘Without’ will be admittedly good at filling a dance floor quickly but beyond that sound not that much exciting to me. The strength of this compilation was always in presenting a bunch of highly talented, unknown projects or bands, first one being COMADUSTER with ‘Foam Abattoir’ that starts mild with analogue melodies before veering into ominous, complex electronic regions, evoking nightmarish moods and featuring an outstanding vocal performance.

Next one would be [CELL 7] and a cover of a track I really never did expect to appear here it’s ‘Losing My Religion’, but after hearing the version I can understand why it’s gotten a place on the disc. PAIL is a name that most likely won’t sound familiar to many. You should get to know them fast, for ‘Silence’, here included in a special ‘Septic Edit’ where gloomy electronica converges with an acoustic flavour in a compelling way that makes me wonder why I’ve not discovered them earlier already. Luckily, there are still labels finding such hidden treasures. Who felt the original of FIX8:SED8‘s ‘Monolith’ was way too short should prick up their ears. The ‘Almost Infinite FPR Extend’ clocks in at 9 minutes of old-school industrial sound with that immense urgency the epic melodic theme atop the rhythm produces. Rhythm is the focal point of PORTION CONTROL’S ‘Amnesia (Beta.01)’, a cold sophisticated construction with rough vocals screamed over them. Last but not least we have FRACTURED coming up with a new track called ‘Dig’, which is, by FRACTURED terms, a sparsely orchestrated, calm piece giving the collection a haunting ending.

‘Septic IX’ once again delivers a quality mix of different styles in electronic music and with projects such as PAIL, [CELL 7] and especially the very strong COMADUSTER puts about new names adding a fresh new wind.
