Album Review

German four - piece heavy metal act UNHERZ this year released the debut album through Massacre Records reasonably entitled ‘Unherzlich Wilkommen’ that features 10 equally good tracks but in fact produces an ambiguous impression. First of all, the music generally is powerful, driving and diverse enough but after listening to several songs written almost in the same manner, actually you may get bored. The lyrics in German touch upon different social issues and are meant to get some feedback from listeners but only from those who know the language otherwise the message won’t be got. Although it’s not necessary to understand everything to get the main ideas besides in whole all components of the compositions perfectly combine and please with the energy and expressiveness.

Already the opening song sets pace for the other material and indeed allows to judge about the rest of the tracks: vigorous guitars, simple yet attractive arrangements and clear-cut rhythm immediately charges you with positive despite the topicality of the compositions. The metal actually is not the right word to describe the style because some elements are too light and too provocative that reminds of hardcore. It’s hard to mark out some pieces that are better than the rest yet I appreciate mostly ‘Therapie’, ‘Amok’ and closing ‘Unherz’ however the other tracks also are worthy to listen to and may interest fans of the style but in general the album will mostly do as a background music.
