Album Review

WE ONLY SAID is a French Post-Rock quintet, their self-titled album sports a photo of a (decrepit and seemingly crying) car - an apt symbol as it is quite a quirky ride through expanse (akin to Holland) of their music. It demands attention if you really want to get at the string of it; it’s not exactly something you could listen to in a rush. Song structures have more blurred edges; their feel is eclectic, and thoroughly infused with melancholy tendencies -lyrics and music alike though nothing to worry about, your razors and wrists are quite safe.

‘Driving My Car’ is one of the songs which offer less of the bland stroll than the rest - even singing ups it a notch; there’s more of a rhythmic oomph to it as well making it one of the better songs. Another worth a mention is ‘Go Rotten’ - for the piano sound deftly intensifying the mood and atmosphere, vocals are great here too building up the song to a crescendo, though not dramatic or surprising, it is nevertheless enriching the dynamics of an album where they are mostly subdued. The last one ‘I Discover the Murder’ is a highlight of this album. Many of the songs run around a bit out of cohesion. If it was an orchestra, you’d say what the hell is wrong with the conductor, most of the time it’s a collage where you’d expect canvass, but this song feels like the musicians finally decided to co-ordinate all the components together and tie the loose ends... Well, there is some method to the madness after all, phew...

If you enjoy a creation between MOGWAI and MY BLOODY VALENTINE (to give points of reference, not to mention that their name has its origins in MBV’s song ‘I only said’) you will like them, the repetitiveness and stupefying disorientation of such a style can put off some, and enthuse others (especially those who peruse mind-altering ingredients).  Whilst I wouldn’t rush to eighty-six them, I don’t see WE ONLY SAID to become one of the mainstays on my playlists.
