Album Review

French electronic freak ZELLER made its debut appearance with the album ‘Audio Vandalism’, released in 2008 on German Hymen Records label. Two years later he’s joined the Tympanik Audio family to release his second collection, entitled ‘Turbulences’. A taste of the “chaotic soundscapes” mentioned by the label is already given with the opening ‘Supernova’ with widescreen noise layers racing from left to right, run through filters, chopped and maimed. It’s a sensory overload taking place, but in a good way. Additional textures create a sense of menace throughout the beatless inferno. ‘Le Pain Maudit’ breeds discomfort with a French sample backed by a deep droning and crackling noises before the dirty industrial beat kicks in and a dark ambiance train’s pulling through the station again and again. Bass vibrations are being send out on the beginning of ‘Sea Of Clouds’, which has actually such a calm sounding title, indicating piece and a sense of flying. Nothing with piece and certainly nothing with flying when the oppressing moods of the atmospheres raised tear you down to the ground, quivering with fear.

The multitude of in parts noisy beats are of a heavy and frigid nature, choking off every even remotely positive emotion right away. Picture the ‘Dark Matter Observatory’ as a secluded space where you can watch the dark matter from a safe position; how it’s twitching, writhing and scraping at the walls of its cage, giving birth to peculiar sounds and frightening moods with the one observing it at the time. ‘Seneretatis Mare’ is lifting you up to the outer spheres of space, taking you past multi coloured galactic fog clouds, radiating the melodies of eternity. A cross-breed of noise and complex industrial is coming up next with the ‘Starship Weapons Kit’, leaving not much room for many melodic gimmicks. ‘Asperitatis Texture’ unleashes a storm of thick noises and deep drones, eventually forming muffled sequences that never cease to amaze with their cunning design. An alarm signal sounds; it’s announcing a myriad of light speed particles of ‘Galactik Dust’ approaching. The echoes generated when hitting the ship sometimes appear as clear patterns; other times resonate with a violent will of destruction. Even though the basic theme remains quite the same ZELLER manages to wrap the beats in ever shifting clothes of a varying strength and intensity. One hell of a track!

ZELLER puts to the table an enormous versatility when it comes to creating protean works, melding industrial, noise and ambient to a stirring experience, at the same time maintaining an admirable consistency between the various tracks. ‘Turbulences’ is a late highlight of 2010!
