Album Review

So, Prophecy Productions has finally released a new label sampler, years after the label's ‘Eerie Emotional’ series of samplers and various promo samplers. ‘Whom the Moon a Nightsong sings’ is thematically limited, focussing mainly on songs from Prophecy Productions' acoustic artists - or, to be more precise, solely on acoustic songs, even if certain bands such as LES DISCRETS, NUCLEUS TORN and DORNENREICH are (or were) more metal-orientated.

The 2CD sampler has a ton of exclusive tracks, apart from DORNENREICH's ‘Dem Wind Geboren’, LES DISCRETS ‘Apres l'Ombre’, an ORPLID demo track and ‘Synen’ from the mighty ULVER. In other words, just four rare versions and 16 exclusive, new songs make this one worth picking up. Apart from all the exclusive material, many fans will see the new EMPYRIUM track ‘The Days Before The Fall’ as one major reason for buying this sampler. And what a great track it is, once again combining not only acoustic instruments, but also a nice and heavy electric guitar, reminding of the glorious days when EMPYRIUM hit the scene with ‘A Winter Sunset’ and ‘Songs of Moors and Misty Fields’, yet with the bands current production and songwriting proficiency.

It is rather difficult to pick songs that stand out, due to the high quality of music featured on this sampler. Not one single song is merely "alright", or just "ok". ‘Whom the Moon a Nightsong sings’ is another fine example of why Prophecy Productions plays the role it does, as the sampler features unique artists sharing a similar vision - at least in parts. From a musical aspect, there is nothing that can be said against going out and buying this sampler. As a matter of fact, if you like this kind of music then the two CDs simply have to be added to an existing collection and listened to during the misty, dark days of autumn and winter.

Fans of the old "Heavenly Voices" samplers which appeared back in the 90ies on Hyperium Records should also take note. HAYNATT's track ‘Dagen Og Natta’ harkens back to those times of Ethereal Gothic samplers. Yet it is the only track featuring a female voice, nearly all the songs are purely acoustic, apart from three, four tracks with male vocals. A great sampler for both fans of the label's acoustic side, as well as newcomers looking for what the label has to offer apart from (black) metal.
