Album Review

Ever since the year of 2002, the Californian sextet WINDS OF PLAGUE has been taking up the cause of combining brutal Deathcore with symphonic elements, caused by the rather unusual use of synthesizers and keyboards. Nowadays, the band is about to put out their fourth studio record, entitled ‘Against the World’, which follows pieces like ‘A Cold Day in Hell’ (2005) or ‘Decimate the Weak’ (2008).

After an interesting intro, ‘One For the Butcher’ breaks lose. Being totally new to the band, I thought at first that I had accidentally mixed two CDs - apart from harsh core rhythms, symphonic elements could be heard as well. Although it sounds like one needs to get used to it, the keyboard melodies still add a nice variety to the songs and definitely give the band their own character. This is especially important, since the genres of Metalcore, Deathcore and Hardcore are currently floated with new and uprising bands.

Yet, WINDS OF PLAGUE should not be reduced to their addition of symphonic phrases - the rest of the music is well-made, possessing the typical break-downs, monotonous and brutal vocals as well as demanding guitar-work. Songs like ‘Monsters’ or ‘Built For War’ appear to be quite outstanding, since the speed is quite significant and some groove and catchiness can be found as well. In general, one has to be familiar and ambitious about Core-orientated music, since otherwise one might not be able to fully enjoy the music. At times, the songs seem to be a bit repetitive and monotonous. Yet, open-minded people should definitely give this album a try.
