Single Review

WITHIN TEMPTATION is one of the bands that has defined the genre of Symphonic Metal and has been around since 1996 and I’m sure you’ve heard of them so I won’t go on with an introduction. In March they released their fifth album ‘The Unforgiving’, musically it was more stripped down album in a more of a Rock position than Metal itself. It was a concept album that has been inspired by the comic books “The Chronicles Of Spellborn” written by Steven O’Connell, who was invited to collaborate on the album. Together with a release of comic books alongside the music, they’ve made several short films for it. The album tells a story of a struggle for truth and centres on the character of Janice, a detective, whose daughter was murdered. When I reviewed the album previously, I have unfortunately mixed Janice up with another main character in this story, Sinéad. Now she comes back to me in the likeness of a single release ‘Sinead’ to review.

The song has an empowering message, Sinead is given a second chance at life, and the song is filled with a spirit of resolution and determination - and even if the second chance won’t last, she’s throwing emotional baggage out whether those around her like it or not. It’s a catchy and strong song with a lot of oomph, though not the most interesting from the album, still outstanding. The single contains only two versions. The Single Edit is not so different from the original song to offer it in a new light. The Scooter Remix gives the song a club finish. It doesn’t transform the song in any unexpected, new way and if it wasn’t for Sharon del Adel’s voice it wouldn’t even merit a remark. It’s far too small release that doesn’t really bring much to be enthused about. The only positive is that if you hadn’t heard the album you’ll be introduced to one of its central songs, but however great that song is, the single is rather disappointing in this version.

There is an extended version with an additional song ‘Empty Eyes’ which is only available on MCD and two more remixes of ‘Sinead’ (VNV Nation Remix and Groove Coverage Remix) which both sound pretty promising… bit we cannot judge about them, so it is your turn to check it out.
