Wir sind Helden, EMMA6

‘Bring mich nach Hause’ is the title for the current WIR SIND HELDEN album. But contrary to its meaning of “Bring me home”, it’s taken the band out into the world and on this, a little too cold, night to entertain an audience in Münster.

EMMA6

The two brothers and their best friend decided in 2006 to become musicians and have built quite a following in playing gigs, amongst others as support for WIR SIND HELDEN. The debut album of the guys us entitled ‘Soundtrack für dieses Jahr’ and will be released in April 2011. http://www.emma6.de / http://www.facebook.com/emma6musik

The band entered the stage to considerable applause that evening. Well, that might have been due to one member of WIR SIND HELDEN introducing them I figured at first. But later on it turned out many fans were extremely excited to see the three-piece. While we’re on the subject, they were just a three-piece cause their drummer chose to keep up against a viral infection. Anyway, let’s jump forward to the music program, starting with the upbeat ‘Soundtrack für dieses Jahr’ which as far as that could be seen in the dim darkness, had some heads nodding, leading into joyful cheers on the forthcoming tracks like ‘Was kann ich dafür, das ich aus den 80ern bin’ or ’Leuchtfeuer’ that came out with electronic accentuation. Not moving aplenty up there it still was obvious that the band gained more and more fun with the gig proceding. When it ended they left the stage to great applause and having won over a few new fans as well.

Wir sind Helden

German band WIR SIND HELDEN, founded in 2001, (German for “We are heroes”) is difficult to categorise; the group's style has often been considered similar to that of the Neue Deutsche Welle or Rio Reiser and the music of the “Hamburger Schule”. Songs such as 'Denkmal' bear resemblance to NIRVANA, whilst others such as 'Nur ein Wort' evoke NEW ORDER. Also, the band is famous for its videos; so i.e. the video for 'Nur ein Wort' was an imitation of BOB DYLAN's famous 60s 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' "video". The sense of humour evident in many WIR SIND HELDEN lyrics and videos sets them apart from the more earnest end of Indie music, however. After Judith’s baby break, the band was back with a new album: ‘Soundso’ (‘Thingamabob’), a clear and direct album, released in May 2007, followed by another break after which the band returned with ‘Bring mich nach Hause’. http://www.wirsindhelden.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/wirsindhelden

Music & Performance

Job done for the support band and now an army of people started rebuilding everything quickly, so the main band could enter the hall to an excited audience, looking for a jolly evening, and they should get one. Teasing with ‘Forever Young’ on ukulele and jumping headfirst into ‘The Geek’, the band kicked it off and the audience, still in the dark, started moving a little, too. Judith commented on the darkness later by asking if anyone was still there and a loud choir let her and the band know they were. Further on we went with ‘Von hier an Blind’ and ‘Is das So’ and the dancing around got more vivid with time, which goes just as well for the band’s dancing. We had a little excursion afterwards into what a “Sushi training” actually was, before it became much quieter with ‘Du erkennst mich nicht wieder’ having the stage bathed in moody blue lights. The clapping of the fans, occurring later just seemed all the louder.

At last, the song exploded in a stirring finale. The piano guided our way into the next song ‘Bring mich nach Hause’ offering such wonderful melancholy moments. The next one was meant to shake that feeling off. ‘Im Auge des Sturms’ was anything but calm, and I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen a Banjo on all the live shows I’ve attended already. Oh, and I shouldn’t forget to mention the little detour into musical realms with ‘Let The Sunshine In’. ‘Rüssel an Schwanz’, undeniably a great song with an odd title, became one highlight of this evening’s show with the audience at one point singing while the band kept dancing, and drummer Pola Roy in its course was “forced” to do the 80s disco dance. The peak of it all undoubtedly was the last song of the main set ‘Denkmal’ with the audience singing the lyrics louder than the band and dancing as long as the song lasted. An encore was just a matter of form and we were granted one series of songs, including a classic ‘Die Ballade von Wolfgang und Brigitte’ and ‘Müssen nur Wollen’. Sadly I could not see if there was another encore block since I had to catch my ride home. But what I say was more than enough to say it was grandiose.
