Day 1: Doro, Holy Moses, Tourettes, Dylath-leen

The fifth edition of the female fronted metal fest! A great line up this year and they even had a special DVD recording in store for us. The first evening was filled with some of the toughest ladies in metal. Some were very surprised when hearing the voice and then seeing a lady on stage. Who says men rule metal? Not this weekend, that’s for sure!!

The first evening of the Metal female Voices Fest 2007 started with three surprises, two bad and one good news. The bad news was that Benedictum and Darzamat were cancelled. The good news was that Tourettes was added to the bill board.

Dylath-Leen

This band has been named after a fictional city from the book Dream Cycle by H.P. Lovecraft. Their visuals and their lyrics have been inspired by this writer as well. They are from France and play atmospheric death metal. So they are one of the more heavy bands at this festival. They have been around since 1999 and have released their first album "Insecure" in 2002. Their second album "Semeïon" has been recorderd and is soon to be released. They wil have a special release party at Ten Weyngaert in Brussels on 24th November.

Music and performance
Dylath-Leen combines two singings : surprising female vocals of Kathy Coupez alternating growls and clear voices, and male deep death metal vocals of Igor Langorique. Both singers play guitar and are accompaigned by headbanging Magali Seguy at the keyboards, Jeremy Mairesse at the bass and Arnaud Brabant at the drums. The sound of Dylath-Leen is at the same time very heavy, cutting and melodic, creating a very dark atmosphere, emphasize by dimmed and sometimes intense red ligthening, giving some headache for the photographers.

Tourettes

With a new album coming up it was of course a great opportunity for the Tourettes to come and play at this festival. They were on a European tour luckily because they come from Australia. The album ‘Treason Songs’ will be released in November 2007.

Music and performance
Tourettes is a quite impressive brutal band, with a great, very strong and heavy sound. The performance of charsimatic front woman Michele Madden is quite original and unpreceded with a deep gutural voice. We were very surprised that these kind of vocals could come from a lady.  To add to the confusion, she arrived on stage with a classic manly back suit, white shirt and black tie, looking very male from the distance. But her belly, hips and moreover the suppleness of her back do not lie, she is definetely a female!  Suddendly Michele jumped off the stage to go and greet one of her fans she had recognized! We learned that the fan was a French girl who just came over for the Metal Female Voice Fest but did not expect to see Tourettes her favourite band. Apparently, Michele told her "I am here to play for you"....

Holy Moses

Get ready for some original thrash metal! This band has been around for a while, since 1980 to be precise. One year later Sabine is forced to sing with Holy Moses since her boyfriend isn’t going to perform and the gig is about to start. From then on she is the leading lady of Holy Moses and she hasn’t lost her spice, at all.

Music and performance
Their drummer was on a small height, making it easier to see him and his double bass. Which was extensively used during the performance. My first impression of Sabine, heavy chick! (not in weight). For some cooling down Sabine first poured water into her mouth and then into her shirt. She has a vocal mixture of screams and grunts. Sabine asked for a mosh pit, or rather a circle pit “like in the eighties” but I guess the audience wasn’t quite ready for that yet. Then of course there had to be a song from the eighties, 1989 to precise: ‘Lost in the maze’. Especially for all the leaders of the fan clubs there was a request played: ‘Summer Kills’ followed by the opening song of their my space site ‘End of Time’. For her special 25th anniversary show, Sabina wanted to do something special, besides playing special requested songs, she invited the fans to join her on stage like "in the good old times", reassuring the security telling them it was OK. So, about 20 people were headbanging on stage with Sabina fot the two last songs.

Doro

Another legend on stage! Dorothee Pesch known as "the queen of metal". Her last album ‘Warrior Soul’ has been released last year but it is still very popular. They might say she is 44 years old but that isn’t true at all, she is only 44 years young. With a wonderful ‘Warrior Soul’ backdrop, tight leather pants and the energy of at least ten people she came to the stage to sweep us all of off our feet.

Music and performance
After a wonderful atmospheric intro the metal kicked in. ‘I Rule the Ruins’ is one of the first songs, well she rules more then just the ruins this evening. She is very enthusiastic and keeps making contact with the audience. It is an exchange of positive energy. With her great rawness of voice she tells us “You Are My Family” which is of course the song she played then. Then it was time for an song from the Warlock era ‘ Fight for Rock’ and after that we went even further back in time with ‘Burning the Witches’ from the 1984 album with the same title. From 1984 we travel all the way to 2006 with ‘Above the Ashes’. She proves that even though she has been singing this long her voice is still fine, hitting high notes without any trouble. There is a great light show although it is a shame that there is not that much front light. A intimate moment is created with ‘Für Immer’ only accompanied by keyboard and drums at first before the guitars set in again. The song ends with a guitar solo. Always great to see that there is some special attention for the musicians as well. We only had this song to catch our breath before ‘Breaking the Law’ (Judas Priest) got us all singing along. After warming up our voices it was time to sing along to ‘All We Are’. The audience light was on, everybody clapping and singing along. Sabina from Holy Moses came to sing along as well. Maybe not the best combination of voices but great to see. Of course Doro couldn’t leave after this, there had to be an encore. ‘Hellbound’ was the first of them. ‘Love Me In Black’ was dedicated to all the ladies “because this is a ladies festival”, a great ballad full of emotion. Leaving us all full of energy and wanting more, Doro left the building. But not before a very long signing and photography session, such patience!
