20th June 2009
Blackfield Festival 2009 Day 1: VNV Nation, Diary of Dreams, Project Pitchfork, Zeraphine, Rotersand, End of Green, Fetisch:Mensch, Destroid, Staubkind, Kloq

With its second issue, the Blackfield Festival is still a very young one, but there can be absolutely no doubt that it’s already one of the top festivals Germany has to offer to the Dark Alternative music scene. Very positive comments afterward prove it. On its premier last year, the festival lured about 4,000 people on every of its three days to the wonderful location of the Amphi theatre Gelsenkirchen celebrating peacefully a big party with their favourite bands. This year, more than 6,000 people gathered at this wonderful location.

The weather forecasts for this first festival day were not very exciting though. And indeed, right when we arrived at the area, a heavy rain shower came down. Some more followed during the first two hours, but then it was rather dry and people could enjoy their favourite bands in sunlight. The festival Saturday offered a great line-up with renowned act VNV NATION headlining the day. Besides that, DIARY OF DREAMS and electro legend PROJECT PITCHFORK shared the stage with ZERAPHINE or ROTERSAND. Short before 12 it was time for moderator Jens (X-DIVIDE) to announce KLOQ opening the festival.

Kloq (Sebastian Huhn)

KLOQ is the musical outlet of Oz Morsley, who should be familiar to many people as part of EMPIRION with whom he released several singles such as ‘Narcotic Influence’ and remixed well-known acts like THE PRODIGY, FRONT 242 or MOBY. After EMPIRION, the first KLOQ tracks were released through Atomic Records which Ors describes as “…the transition from EMPIRION to what the KLOQ sound is now.” After producing some other artists he thought about developing the sound, incorporating vocals and stuff like that and the voice for the tracks on the single ‘We’re just Physical’ released in 2007 via Out of Line was no one less than Douglas McCarthy from NITZER EBB, delivering his trademark shouts to the energetic sounds to make the dance floors quake. The subsequent release of the very first album ‘Move Forward’ was an overall success for the project and sneaked into the top lists of many music fans all over the world. KLOQ is Oz Morsley (producer / writer) with vocal performances by Douglas McCarthy and Greg Cumbers. Live on stage, KLOQ is Oz Morsley (keyboards), Greg Cumbers (vocals), Tim Jackson (bass) and Steve Wilson (drums). http://www.kloq.co.uk/ / http://www.myspace.com/kloq

Music & Performance
“Good Afternoon Blackfield”, so we were welcomed by the singer of British electronic act KLOQ and it really would have been a good “afternoon” if the weather wasn’t so mixed up by that time. The show, however, made up everything for those gathering in front of the stage under the roof and the others crowding the area around with their umbrellas. Already on the first song ‘We’re Just Physical’, the little man with the huge sunglasses put up a real good show and used the considerable space he had on stage widely and animated the people whenever possible. Also bass player Tim Jackson displayed a fair urge to move. The set continued with the two club smashers ‘You Never Know’ and ‘I Never Said’; the latter of which is a favourite of mine on the debut album ‘Move Forward’.

The title-giving track came up next on the list and it astonishes how fluid Greg Cumbers switches from clean to rawer vocal parts. Another interesting detail! There, where other bands use their studio drum tracks, KLOQ are using a live drum set and it suites the sound and makes it so dynamic and vibrant. After only six songs the time was already up and with it an energetic performance, perfect for an opening slot to wake the masses up.

Staubkind (Carsten Leopold)

STAUBKIND was founded in 2003 by vocalist Sven "Louis" Manke known as a member of TERMINAL CHOICE. The band took inspirations from artists such as OOMPH!, ZEROMANCER, LINKIN PARK and EVANESCENCE. The current album is called ‘Zu weit’ and was released in 2007. STAUBKIND is Sven "Louis" Manke (vocals), Rico Meerheim (guitar), Friedemann "Friedel" Mäthger (drums) and Sebastian "Bassty" Scheibe (bass). http://www.staubkind.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/staubkindsite

Music & Performance
Just in time at 12:45AM, STAUBKIND entered the stage. Singer Louis - clothed with a white shirt and a black waistcoat - was flanked by the guitar and the bass player, both being clothed with white shirts and white scarves. In the background, the drums were arranged. STAUBKIND performed a powerful set of nine songs, starting with ‘Halt mich’ after the intro leading into the set. The crowd acknowledged several songs with applause. There were surely some fans out there in the crowd. After about 30 minutes the show was finished with ‘Mein Herz’.

Destroid (Sebastian Huhn)

DESTROID is a project of Daniel Myer, who is also well-known for his other projects, i.e. HAUJOBB and ARCHITECT. With their first album 'Future Prophecies' released in 2004, they already gathered much attention by the press as well as from the fans of electronic music. Their second album, which is called 'Loudspeaker', was released on 26th October 2007 and was once again a success as much as it was an evolvement of the band’s sound. DESTROID is Seb Rydell aka Sebi (production, arrangements), Yamazaki aka Daniel (production, arrangements, vocals) and Lil' Demon aka Ribi (live noises). http://www.destroid.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/destroidmusic

Music & Performance
This time on stage, Daniel was only accompanied by Ribi on keyboards. I had seen DESTROID a couple of times before and of course here I was in attendance as well. Harsh, distorted industrial sounds sounding down to us made clear that ‘Soul Asylum’ would make the opener once again with a Daniel Myer screaming out the lyrics with a vehemence and power that was absolutely remarkable. Not half as harsh but as well danceable, the ‘Bird of Prey’ flew down on us to be followed by the driving urgency that lies within ‘Revolution’ and ‘Judgement Throne’ is one of my all-time DESTROID favourites I can’t listen to often enough. The absolute highlight however was the calm version of the ‘Loudspeaker’ opener ‘Let Me Leave’. The studio version already makes my hairs stand on end but this one is overkill; especially on the chorus part with the piano accentuation.

I cast another vote for a release of that version with its splendid drum section close to the end. The set ended after 10 songs with ‘Bonewhite Light’ in a claustrophobic and danceable way. I did miss the tech breaks I had seen and loved on the last show I’ve attended. Nevertheless, it was a neat performance but without big surprises.

Fetisch:Mensch (Sebastian Huhn)

This project is the brainchild of Oswald Henke, mastermind of GOETHES ERBEN. The centre of the lyrical content is the human being with all its facets, its weaknesses and strengths; in its beauty and scum. The credo of FETISCH:MENSCH is to deny themselves the mechanisms of the industry as far as possible. Music should be something special; and shouldn’t just be consumed, that’s why they don’t release any albums and put their main focus on live performances. The line-up is as follows: Oswald Henke (lyrics), Tim Hoffmann (guitar, programming), Jochen Schoberth (guitar & guitar synth) and Dirk Törppe (drums). http://www.fetisch-mensch.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/fetischmensch

Music & Performance
I had taken this band on short notice and now I wasn’t sure anymore if that was such a good idea. I mean, Oswald Henke is a brand in the dark scene, no doubt about it but thus far I didn’t consider myself a fan, especially not of his voice. What I ended up seeing then was more of an art performance than what most people would call an ordinary live show. When Oswald Henke performs his lyrics about the good and the evil facets of man, then it’s like he’s the actor in a theatre play that exists solely in his mind and he’s rushing and jumping and acting using the stage as if it’s his own; seemed to me like maniac, while his band delivered guitar driven hard sound with spherical melodies.

Surely, it’s up to everyone’s own taste whether he labels the action a freak show or true art but one thing’s undeniable: This has much more deserved the label “Performance” than the stupid hopping too many bands out of the electronic sector put to display.

End of Green (J. “Niggels” Uhlenbruch)

The German band END OF GREEN founded in 1992 in Stuttgart and back in the beginnings they played a mixture of Goth Rock and Metal. According to singer Michael Huber, the band name symbolizes the end of hope, associated with the colour Green. A few line-up changes and demos later, they eventually signed a deal with Nuclear Blast and released the debut ‘Infinity’ in 1996. Soon afterwards the band and the label broke up again and unleash the next album on the new Subzero Records label. Constant touring with acts like PARADISE LOST, IN EXTREMO or IGGY POP provides for a growing fan base that waits until 2002 until ‘Songs for a Dying World’ is released, finally. It just takes one year for them to come up with the next record ‘Last Night on Earth’ in 2003. By now the sixth album ‘The Sick’s Sense’ is hit the shops in summer 2008. The current line-up is as follows: Michelle Darkness (vocals, guitar), Kirk Kirker (guitar), Sad Sir (guitar), Rainier Sicone Di Hampez (bass) and Lusiffer (drums). http://www.endofgreen.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/endofgreen

Music & Performance
The Stuttgart based END OF GREEN performed their Dark Rock music on a sunny afternoon at the Blackfield in Gelsenkirchen, and sunny afternoons are probably not the perfect setting for END OF GREEN's sound, which the band itself labels “Depressed Subcore”. Not that this term would tell you too much about the music - just image a morbid mix of Gothic, Metal and Grunge. The Grunge and Alternative Rock element of END OF GREEN's music made them a little bit the strange fish in the line up of this festival, though the inherent darkness of their music made their billing perfect at the same time too. Performing to a good crowd in the early hours of the first festival day, END OF GREEN proved that they know how to deliver a good show. And I for one appreciated it a lot that with a band like END OF GREEN brought some variety to the festival's line up.

Rotersand (Carsten Leopold)

ROTERSAND is a German electronic music act, formed in September 2002 by musician / producer Gun and singer Rascal with dance music producer Krischan Wesenberg joining shortly after. Being referred to by the band itself as Industrial Pop, ROTERSAND's music can generally be described as danceable electro or Future Pop. The current release was the EP ‘I cry’ which was released last year. Currently, a new album is in the making to be released on the band’s new label Trisol. ROTERSAND are Rasc (vocals, guitar), Gun (keyboard, guitar) and Krischan (turntables). http://www.rotersand.net/ / http://www.myspace.com/rotersand

Music & Performance
ROTERSAND started their show with ‘Electronic World Transmission’ and quickly the spirit went over to the crowd. The space in front of stage was very well-filled meanwhile; the people were dancing, screaming and clapping hands. Once again the guys of ROTERSAND did a rousing performance, during the song ‘Dare to Live’ Rasc jumped down from stage to enter the room in front of stag and walked through the crowd for "dance control" while spreading lots of stickers stating “approved Tanzkontrolle” meaning “approved dance control”. Band and audience had a lot of fun; the set list included mostly well-known songs like ‘Lost’, ‘I cry’ or ‘Exterminate Annihilate Destroy’, highlighted by the very new and yet unreleased song ‘First Time’.

Zeraphine (Sebastian Huhn)

ZERAPHNE rose from the ashes of the legendary DREADFUL SHADOWS, formed by two of its former members Sven Friedrich and Norman Selbig. Together with producer Tommy Hein, the first album ‘Kalte Sonne’ was recorded and then released in 2002. It was completely sung in German, contrary to second album ‘Traumaworld’ comprising of mixed German and English lyrics and a nice cover of the DEPECHE MODE track ‘In Your Room’. The third album ‘Blind Camera’, released in 2005, left confided territory and turned to heavier guitar riffs and harder arrangements, still the dominating factor was Sven’s charismatic voice. Their fourth album ‘Still’ was the first album release by their own label, which the band founded after their previous record deal ended. In 2007, the band released a Best-Of compilation, titled ‘Years in Black’. But what the fans are really waiting for is some new material right now and hopefully they don’t have to wait that long anymore. ZERAPHINE is Sven Friedrich (vocals), Norman Selbig (guitar), Manuel Senger (guitar), Michael Nepp (bass) and Marcellus Puhlemann (drums). http://www.zeraphine.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/zeraphine

Music & Performance
Last year, Sven Friedrich was already present on the first Blackfield Festival with his project SOLAR FAKE and now he’s back in town with ZERAPHINE and their more rocking sounds. ‘Die Macht in Dir’ from the last album ‘Still’ opened the set with nice, driving sounds and as usual Sven Friedrich was sticking around in the same area moving forwards and backwards but occasionally breaking out. The other band members ever were in motion and had visible fun up there, while the people’s reactions were rather underwhelming and that didn’t change much until ‘Be My Rain’ came up. This one’s an everlasting crowd pleaser and finally you could spot risen arms, clapping along to the song. As next one a new track came on called ‘I will be there’, a positive surprise as it goes back to the essence of what ZERAPHINE’s sound is defined by: catchy, wide melodies and rock elements. So, my fears the next album, whenever that is going to be released, would become another one like ‘Still’ were in vain? We’ll see!

But the second new song ‘Louisa’ makes it very likely. A beautiful song in my humble opinion and the audience felt the same way according to their reactions. ZERAPHINE closed their show with two much-loved gems from the very first album ‘Kalte Sonne’: the rather mellow ‘Ohne Dich’ and the darkly rocking ‘Die Wirklichkeit’. The crowd took leave from the band with a fair applause.

01. Die Macht in Dir
02. No More Doubts

Project Pitchfork (J. “Niggels” Uhlenbruch)

PROJECT PITCHFORK is one of the spearheads in the alternative electronic music, initially consisting only of Peter Spilles and Dirk Scheuber. Later Jürgen Jansen and live members Achim Färber and Carsten Klatte joined the line-up. The formation wasn’t just known for critically-acclaimed albums, successful tours and appearances on every conceivable festival but also for some prominent support acts like RAMMSTEIN or COVENANT. After some very successful years at the beginning of this millennium, the popularity decreased with the more introverted albums ‘Inferno’ and ‘Kaskade’ but nothing has changed in East Germany and in Russia, where a tribute to Pitchfork sampler has been created in 2005. In 2009 they eventually came back with a new full-length, titled ‘Dream, Tiresias!’. http://www.pitchfork.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/projectpitchfork

Music & Performance
I was never a fan of PROJECT PITCHFORK! I've liked the old song here and there but especially in the mid-90s, when PITCHFORK's went through the roof to become one of the biggest acts of the scene which even gained quite some mainstream success, I thought that PITCHFORK were a little overrated. In the new millennium, PROJECT PITCHFORK's star has not been as shining as it used to be once and the last few albums didn't have the impact as the old ones did during they heyday of the band. Oddly enough, this is when I started to like PITCHFORK's output more and more. PROJECT PITCHFORK's latest album ‘Dream, Tiresias!’, released earlier this year on the band's own label Candyland, was a return to form for many old fans. One of the few times I can agree with PITCHFORK's fan base. Last year's gig at the Amphi Festival in Cologne was pretty enjoyable - so much more than the last PITCHFORK gig I saw just a year before - so I was looking forward to the show of the “Pitchies” at the Blackfield festival.

Peter Spilles (vocals), Dirk “Scheubi” Scheuber (keys), Jürgen Jansen (keys) and the additional live members Achim Faerber (drums) and Carsten Klatte (guitar) rushed on stage - and as everybody knows, casual street wear is a no-no for PROJECT PITCHFORK! Skin and hair were covered with mud and paint as if they just escaped from a swamp in their black leather wear, and Peter Spilles of course had this trademark blue stripe crossing his face. They started with ‘If I Could’, a track from the new album, and it was quite an energetic kick-off for their show. With ‘God Wrote’ and ‘Requiem’ two classics followed and gave the broad hint that PITCHFORK were going to play a set list full of old fan faves at the Blackfield. Sound-wise the music was somehow rougher and edgier than earlier performances, more stripped down to the essentials of the songs though with quite some energy added. It was similar with Spilles’ vocals, which seemed to be a bit rougher and deeper to my ears - less than a gnome on warpath as on their early records, I dare to say (with tongue firmly in cheek). In some ways Peter Spilles' stage presence reminded me on SKINNY PUPPY's Nivek Ogre, which is surely not a bad thing.

The entire band was really in a good mood, their new (or re-found?) relaxed attitude with some self-irony added, really does them any good. Strangely there were no further songs from PITCHFORK's latest album, not even the single ‘Feel’. Instead of this the crowd got as many PITCHFORK classics as one could squeeze into 60 minutes, from ‘Alpha Omega’ to ‘Timekiller’. Years back I would have never thought to say a thing like this, but PROJECT PITCHFORK's gig at the Blackfield was among the few gigs of that weekend that still had this dirty, edgy vibe which appears *alternative* in the more literal sense of the word. Good gig!

Diary of Dreams (J. “Niggels” Uhlenbruch)

Since its foundation in 1989 by Adrian Hates, this project or better band (project doesn’t do it justice) enchants a still growing fan base all over the world with beautiful and at times fragile tunes, whose central element was and still is the deep melancholy. It’s hard to describe what makes this music so intriguing, you just have to experience it yourself on one of their intense live shows or on one of the various album the band has released over the time with ‘Nekrolog 43’ released in October 2007. In 2009, the band turned over a new leave of the Diary of Dreams with ‘(if) - The Memento Ritual Project’, released on 13th March 2009. The band has just finished the extensive Russian part of their ‘G(if)t’ tour in support of the new album and are now back on German ground again. DIARY OF DREAMS are Adrian Hates (vocals, guitar), Gaun:A (guitar), D.N.S. (drums) and occasionally Daniel Myer (keyboard) and Torben Wendt (keyboard). http://www.diaryofdreams.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/diaryofdreams

Music & Performance
This band is surely one of the faves of the Reflections of Darkness staff: DIARY OF DREAMS! For almost 15 years Adrian Hates' project - which has evolved to a fully fledged band for quite a while now - aimed more for quality than quantity. Their ninth album ‘(if)’, released in March 2009, proved this yet again. Touring extensively in Eastern Europe, the Blackfield Festival was one of DIARY OF DREAMS' few German shows this summer. And their show started with a few technical problems during the first songs. Especially Torben Wendt - mastermind of DIORAMA, who always remained a member of the DoD family and rejoined the band for live shows again - had some problems with his microphone. But things were sorted out quickly, so the band managed to unfold the magic of their music by and by.

DIARY OF DREAMS' sound is quite diverse, from sparse and balladry to danceable, and Adrian Hates' voice is the key element which keeps everything together. Coming from a classical background with and grown up with the music of famous composers like Beethoven or Mozart, the classically trained guitarist and piano player truly knows what he's doing there up on stage. But his band mates - Gaun:A (guitar), D.N.S. (drums), Torben Wendt (keyboard) and Daniel Myer (samplers) - are nothing short of the band leader's skills. Live on stage DIARY OF DREAMS' songs are much more extroverted and powerful than their rather contemplative, melancholic counterparts on the albums. Of course DIARY OF DREAMS presented a lot of new material from their most recent album ‘(if)’, like the opening track ‘The Wedding’ or the rough and powerful ‘Poison Breed’, but also some old gems like ‘The Curse’, ‘ButterFly:Dance!’ or ‘Traumtänzer’ made it into the setlist.

While Torben Wendt stayed behind his keyboard rack during the more recent material he joined Adrian Hates upfront to support him vocally during ‘ButterFly:Dance!’ and ‘The Curse’. The other notable live guest at the current DoD tour is Daniel Myer, former mastermind of HAUJOBB, new member of COVENANT and known for his involvement in a myriad of musical projects. A DIARY OF DREAMS show during day light lacks - obviously - the darkness which this kind of music requires, but still it was a very good performance which was well received by the pretty big crowd in front of the stage. Especially towards the end the gig became more and more intense which made up for the few glitches at the beginning and the damned sunlight. ;-)

VNV Nation (Carsten Leopold)

Saturday evening at the Amphi Theatre Gelsenkirchen! Time for the headliner VNV NATION! VNV NATION are an electronic music band originally from Wexford and London, now based in Hamburg, that combines elements of industrial music, trance, synth pop and electronic body music. Earlier works also include some electro-industrial influences. The "VNV" in the name stands for “Victory not Vengeance”. Over the years, VNV NATION developed to one of the most important bands of the electro / synth pop scene; the current album called ‘Of Faith, Power and Glory’ was released just at 19th June 2009, one day before the Blackfield show. VNV NATION is Ronan Harris (music, lyrics, vocals) and Mark Jackson (drums); on stage usually they are supported by two additional keyboard players. http://www.vnvnation.com/ / http://www.myspace.com/vnvnation

Music & Performance
After the announcement by Adrian Hates (singer of DIARY OF DREAMS), Ronan Harris, who had announced DIARY OF DREAMS 1.5 hours before, entered the stage together with his band after a long instrumental intro ‘Pro Victoria’ which is the intro/opener of the current album too. Like usually, Ronan and Mark were supported by two keyboard players - this time Vasi Vallis of REAPER / FROZEN PLASMA and André Winter. Right from the start, the temper of the crowd was great. The whole venue was celebrating a big party and all the people inclusive all those on the terraces and stairs were dancing, jumping, screaming and singing along. After the first song ‘Honour’, Ronan did a little break to welcome the audience and animate them to scream ("When you scream, let the neighbours know that you are in town").

After it he announced a new song but just at the first tunes everybody detected that this was not a new song as obviously planned. First followed the well-known old song ‘Epicentre’ and thereafter, the new song called Sentinel was up to be played. The show went on with a sequence of danceable rousing tracks like ‘Nemesis’, ‘Chrome’ or ‘Legion’, combined with beautiful soulful ballads like ‘Illusion’ when the whole crowd was singing loudly, and songs from the just released album like ‘The Great Divide’ or ‘Tomorrow Never Comes’. During the show, the daylight was gone and in the dark the atmosphere in the open air theatre was really great and unforgettable. The main set was finished with the emotional ‘Beloved’ which was performed by Ronan and Mark (keyboard) alone, but of course the crowd wasn't tired and requested an encore.

But before ‘Perpetual’ was played as the last song, Ronan recorded a message for the upcoming US tour and let the crowd scream "Hallo America" which worked out really great. Altogether, this was a really great show which whetted appetite for the upcoming tour in autumn. According to Ronan, this show was one of the best three they ever did. Big compliment, Blackfield festival!

With a fabulous VNV NATION show, the concert program of the day came to an end. After the show, there was the current live DVD of ASP to be shown. Besides that, you had the chance to party until morning at the after show party with several international DJs spinning their favourite music.
