The Human League

THE HUMAN LAGUE is a living legend and one of the forerunners in electronic music. The career of this band began back in June of 1977 when Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh founded the band THE FUTURE. Another member of the band is Ad Newton who is leaving the band shortly after it's foundation to found a band himself. The name of this band is CLOCK DVA. Phil Oakley, who is a former classmate of Martyn becomes the singer and Adrian Wright who is responsible for the support with visual effects at live shows completes the line-up and in October 1977 the band name changes to THE HUMAN LEAGUE and should never change again from there on.

After releasing two albums and some tours as a support for bands like SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES or IGGY POP, Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh were leaving the band due to personal interferences in November of 1980.

Susan Sulley and Anne Catherall become members of the band, when Philip and Adrian discovered them in a nightclub in Sheffield in 1981. At first it was planned that they should just support the band on tour as background singer, but after the release of the single ‘Boys & Girls’ in February 1981 they became full members. The line-up is completed by the bass player Ian Burden and the guitar player Jo Callis.

What followed was a matchless career with Top Ten Hits like ‘Love Action’ or ‘Open your heart’; the album ‘Dare’ which was released in October 1981 became a milestone in electronic music and the single ‘Don't you want me’ even became a worldwide hit.

THE HUMAN LEAGUE were also forerunners, when it comes to Remix Albums. The Remix album ‘Love and Dancing’, released in 1982, is one of the first remix albums in the history of pop music. It was released under the name THE LEAGUE LIMITED ORCHESTRA which is obviously a hint on Barry Whites band THE LOVE UNLIMITED ORCHESTRA. After several line-up changes the formation shrunk to a trio consisting of Phil Oakley, Susan Anne Gayle (former Susan Sulley) and Joanne Catherral, which is the line-up of the band until today.

Now in 2007, this legendary band is on tour again and during this tour they also halt at the Live Music Hall in Cologne. The concert will also include the first complete performance of the cult album ‘Dare’!
