Various venues, Whitby, UK
23rd to 28th April 2009
Diary of Dreams, The House of Usher, The Last Dance, Anders Magna, Abney Park, Razorblade Kisses

Twice a year the quiet fishing town of Whitby, on the dramatic coast of North-East England (the place where Dracula landed) is over-run with hordes of dark souls. This is not a war-like invasion, however, but Goths attending the Whitby Goth Weekend.

From a small beginning of some 200 people in one of the town’s pubs fifteen years ago, the fixture has grown in stature and size to become the UK’s biggest Goth event and now lasts for almost a week. The main official events take place at the Spa Pavilion, a modern hall perched on the cliffs looking out over the North Sea, and the imposing Metropole Hotel, just across the road. In addition, numerous “fringe” events of music, theatre, comedy, bazaars, quizzes, etc, take place at hotels, clubs and pubs throughout the town. Plus, of course, the ultra-competitive Goths vs The Whitby Gazette newspaper football match!

This year’s April official event takes place over the weekend of 24th-26th, with concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings featuring Diary of Dreams (D), The House of Usher (D), The Last Dance (US), Anders Magna (US), Abney Park (US) and Razorblade Kisses (UK). The “fringe” takes place from 23rd until 28th.
