Diary of Dreams - Nekrolog 43 Tour
February 2008
Frankfurt - Leipzig - Dresden - Magdeburg - Essen

After my first German and my foreign shows have been already passed so far, now my last part of the tour had started which was leading me from Frankfurt over Leipzig, Dresden and Magdeburg to Essen where the German tour was ending. Not only that I could see several shows, I was also allowed to spend a day with the band to see how a usual day at tour can be.

Batschkapp, Frankfurt, 6th February 2008

Thanks to my vacation starting on 6th February, this day started quite relaxed for me. At around 1pm I started my ride to Frankfurt, well, to be exact first to Mainz where I was hosted by some friends. From there, we all travelled to Frankfurt where we arrived short before eight and where already a hugs crowd was waiting in front of the Batschkapp for the doors to open. Even though there was still a lot of time until the first band started, we searched for a good spot to stand and take pictures quite early because the venue was filling up really fast and already was close to be bursting when NOYCE TM started their set at nine.

NOYCE TM, means vocalist Florian Schäfer, Keyboarder Oliver and Drummer Thomas, were welcomed very warmly tonight and earned a lot of applause what was visibly fun for the three guys. They convinced their audience again with newer songs like ‘Karmacoma’ or ‘Hypnotized’ but also with older stuff such as ‘White Room’. Anyway, the band had to suffer from some technical breakdown when the Laptop crashed during the new song ‘Tagwerk’. The break was quickly and very skilled bridged by Thomas with a drum solo what caused lots of enthusiasm in front of the stage.

After the usual short rebuilding break, sharp at 22:00, DIARY OF DREAMS entered the stage and the show started with the already well-known intro which also did not miss its effect onto the people this time. In best mood, the band did control the audience from the very start and was obviously excited by the fan reactions what not only was shown by the bright smile of Adrian. To my own excitement, especially the guitars and drums appeared very aggressive and rocking to me. Regardless the tightness and heat in the club you just had to let your urge to move out, such as the band on stage did.

After the main set, the mood changed deliberately with the acoustic bloc following now which was welcomed by the crowd very excited. I still was fascinated - even though it was already my seventh show of the tour - by the new mood of the presented songs and how different it was compared to the original versions; so soft and brittle, so emotional. After the “lullaby” ‘She and her Darkness’ the band said goodbye accompanied by thunderous applause just to appear short afterwards again at the merchandising booth. Sadly, people were pleased out of the club pretty fast what caused some kind of “hectic” end of the evening.

Werk II, Leipzig, 7th February 2008

Even though it is quite a distance from Frankfurt to Leipzig I arrived in Leipzig already at short past 2pm after a journey in bright sunshine. So, there was still a lot of time to get ready, have some coffee and some nice talks and then afterwards go with some friends to the signing session which was to be held at the x-tra-x store at 5pm. Anything there was pretty relaxed, you had a lot of time to talk to the band, take pics and get your stuff signed. After about 30 minutes we made our way back to get some food and later on at about 7.30 we left for the show. Arriving at the Werk II 10 minutes before eight, already lots of fans were waiting in the cold. Just in time at eight the doors opened and we were allowed to get into the warmth.

Today, I used the time before NOYCE TM were starting to explore the location and find good spots and different angles for taking pictures. Thanks to a balcony right across the stage, a very good spot was found soon. I spent most of the time of NOYCE TM’s show there to fully enjoy their great light show in its whole beauty. With lots of joy and delight in playing live, the three guys soon impressed their audience. Songs like ‘Tagwerk’, ‘Our World’ or ‘Panique’ were very well received. And even though the tour is coming to an end soon I still have the impression that the band around singer Florian still develops more and more self-confidence on stage with every show.

Today in Leipzig the venue was big enough that we could again enjoy the whole DIARY OF DREAMS show including all elements. Right in time at 22.00, four dark men wrapped into long black coats and hoods entered the stage, illuminated only from bright spot from the back which were defining their sharp silhouettes. After the very calm spoken words intro - what is really magical every time - the show went on with the already well-known setlist. During the last shows I have seen, the band got more and more explosive on stage. Taste is head banging behind the keyboard, Gauna is steadily moving across the stage and Adrian wears any emotion on his face.

But I was especially impressed during the latest shows by the virtuous drum play of D.N.S. - this energy is just indescribable; I love the drum solo during ‘Soul Stripper’ most. It is incredible! And not only was I impressed by it, also the rest of the audience frenetically cheered during this solo. As always, the main set ended in a rocking and aggressive way with ‘The Curse’ just to drift to calmer regions with the acoustic set. Emotionally, the set ended again with ‘She and her Darkness’. But this last song was not yet the end of the evening. After the band appeared at the merchandising booth, later the evening was going on with the after show party at the Darkflower club where you could celebrate together with the band until the early morning hours.

Reithalle Strasse E, Dresden, 8th February 2008

After I was waking up much too early, to be exact already before nine - even though we were at the after show party until late - I started my ride to Dresden very early. In Dresden I had the chance to follow the band for the whole day to get an impression how an ordinary day on tour looks like. At around 1pm I arrived at the venue where the first works just started… but not, before there was not time for some coffee and breakfast. By and by, the equipment was unloaded and transported into the venue where soon all the instruments and the lighting installation piled up in front of the stage. Further backwards in the hall, the merchandising stand was already built up too. I found it very surprising how fast anything was done. After not even two hours, the whole stage setup was ready and it was time for DIARY - it was just around three - to start their sound check.

Clothed in thick warm jackets - sadly it was very cold in the venue and half of the crew still suffered from a cold - the sounds tracks were adjusted to the songs ‘The Plague’, ‘The Curse’ and ‘MenschFeind’. At about five, the sound check was done and NOYCE TM could start with setting up their equipment and do their sound check. In the meantime, DIARY OF DREAMS went to the Abaddon music store where another signing session was set. Well hosted and provided with coffee and other beverages, the session at the store was very relaxed. Right in time at 6.00 we all were back at the venue for dinner. Afterwards, the time went really slow until NOYCE TM were supposed to start and there was so much time to calm down and relax a bit.

Finally at eight, the doors opened and the Dresden audience - I would guess between 300 and 400 people - filled up the venue waiting for the evening to start with NOYCE TM who entered the stage and hour after opening. Also today, the three guys from Düsseldorf were well received by the audience and raised respectable cheers for their 40-minutes lasting set. The good mood of the audience should last also during the now following gig of the headliner, no, not totally right, it was even growing observable.

From the very first moment, DIARY OF DREAMS seemed to be even more aggressive and energetic on stage today compared with the previous days. With so much fun playing the band caused a lot of excitement within the audience as well and also the guys on stage were infected by the good mood and Mr. Hates thanked the fans more than once. The audience especially liked the drum solo during ‘Soul Stripper’ and the acoustic bloc, as it seemed. And well, these three acoustic songs are every time something very special and you only wish there would be much more of this. After the concert ended in the usual way with ‘She and her Darkness’, the band also took a lot of time for their fans in Dresden who gathered around the merchandising booth today in huge amounts and waited for the band to get some autographs or photos.

Soon afterwards, this day ended for me. Others celebrated longer at the after show party. The coming day in Magdeburg would already be the second last of the tour and some kind of sadness already arose.

Factory, Magdeburg, 9th February 2008

My second last tour day was very relaxed. After breakfast I left Dresden at around 10.30 into direction Magdeburg. I did not do the whole way right away, I fist stopped close to Magdeburg at very dear friends I had not seen for a long time and spent a calm afternoon there. After a very nice dinner I started the journey to Magdeburg at early evening and arrived at the venue just a few minutes before the doors opened. Slowly but steadily, the venue was filling up and I was very curious how the mood within the crowd would be during this show because the band had recorded the ‘Nine in Numbers’ DVD exactly at that venue in 2005 - not without any reason.

Already during the appearance of NOYCE TM the mood was boiling up and every song of the three guys from Düsseldorf was welcomed with cheers. In best temper, drummer Thomas played up behind the drum set. Towards the end of the show, oversized knickers were thrown onto the stage which he - of course - immediately put on over his usual pants. Very funny view that was! Singer Florian was visibly overwhelmed by the audience’s reactions and extensively thanked his fans. Anyway, every good show finds its end sometime and after forty minutes it was already time to clear the stage for upcoming DIARY OF DREAMS.

The performance of the band in Magdeburg was nothing different than the other shows before - except the fact that the mood on stage was even better that during any show I have seen before. And there was something magical during this evening; it was the mood within the audience that was absolutely fantastic. People were raising their arms already for the first song to clap along. And the good mood did not die down until the end of the gig and also a good-humoured Adrian Hates stressed again that it was an honour for the band to record the DVD exactly at that venue. The praise of the audience was well deserved. For me, the show in Magdeburg was the one having the “best” audience during the tour. And I’ve seen really more than a few shows…

After the concert, both bands took markedly lots of time for the fans and all band members as well as the crew celebrated hilariously at the following after show party. They were always there for the fans who really appreciated this close fan contact.

Weststadthalle, Essen, 10th February 2008

All good things must come to an end. Today it was the final tour day, at least according the German tour and I was already quite melancholy. I really could get used to the tour life and I finally understand what exactly the band likes on being on tour. As last venue, Essen in the home area was chosen and the fans appeared in huge amounts. When NOYCE TM started at eight, the venue was very well filled already.

Also during their last show, the three guys showed that they got quite some live experience now and gave everything even though the audience in Essen was a bit reluctant at the beginning. But you felt anyway that the crowd liked what the support act was presenting on stage. For myself I need to say that NOYCE TM got better from show to show and now are much more self-confident on stage. I especially like Florian’s voice which is very good live. The drums bring that special pinch of salt into the otherwise pure electronic music.

After a short waiting period the time for the heroes of the evening had some. Usually you call the last tour day “fools day” and you get several gags on stage. Usually. But not this time. Anyway you could see during the intro that there was something different compared to the shows before. All of a sudden, there were five people on stage instead of the four band members. As I learned later, the fifth person was tour manager Albert Diehl who probably wanted to be on stage for once. Even though he was hooded like the rest of the band. The funny thing was that the band did not know about his stage appearance before and even when he was on stage half of the band did not recognize that there was something different than usually.

Afterwards, there followed the already known mixture of hardness, aggression, emotionality and softness. All those different emotions always fitted to the single song. Still - even though it was my 11th show - I was surprised and delighted by the amount of different feeling Adrian hates puts into the songs. Bit by bit, the audience in Essen was infected by the mood and celebrated their heroes to make the show a worthy final of the tour. When during ‘Traumtänzer’ the whole wall behind the stage inflamed as a sky full of blinking stars, loud and surprised cheers arose within the crowd and of course anyone was singing the chorus of the song loudly when Adrian was holding the microphone into the masses. Magic moment!

After this atmospheric moment, the three-piece ‘Soul Stripper’, ‘Kindrom’ and ‘The Curse’ took care for the rocking finish of the main set just to switch over to very calm tunes with the now following acoustic set consisting of ‘The Curse’, ‘Giftraum’ and ‘O’ Brother Sleep’. Listening to those wonderful acoustic versions you only wish that the band would come up with a full acoustic tour some time. Also the last show was finished with the wonderful, piano accompanied ‘She and her Darkness’ where the glittering stars behind the stage again illuminated the scenery. Furthermore lots of sparklers were enlightened within the audience what cared for another magic moment.

Of course the last show of the tour was the right time and place to thank the support band as well as the complete crew. Together with their support band NOYCE TM, DIARY OF DREAMS said good bye to their fans. And of course all appeared later after the show at the merch booth for some chatting etc.

So, that was the end now. Eleven DIARY OF DREAMS shows of the ‘Nekrolog 43 Tour’ are past. During this tour I had experienced so many wonderful moments I do not want to miss a single one. DIARY OF DREAMS, NOYCE TM and the whole crew - all together were a perfect team and very kind people. Every show I was again excited about the musical abilities of the band. The new arrangements of the older songs brought a total new feeling into the set and all pieces formed a wonderful entity.

Also the interaction on Adrian, Gauna, D.N.S and Taste was just perfect: Adrian always full of emotions, Gauna never standing still on stage, D.N.S. who definitely has developed his drum play further and also Taste was fully integrated into the band right now and impressed with the freshness of youth. Of course there were many surprising moments - I just think of the extraordinary intro, the fire elements but also songs like ‘False Affection, False Creation’ or ‘Retaliation’ which found their way into the set. For my taste there could have been even more not so often played songs or more pieces of the current album in the set. ‘Soul Stripper’ with all its energy and aggression is and will always be one of my absolute live favourites and I take a bow for D.N.S. and his congenial drum solo during this song. Amazing!

At the end, there only one thing left to do, quote the last song of the set and “Let me say thank you for all that you have given me…”
