The Mutant Dubsteb series was established by Greek label Spectraliquid and on the first release out of that collection, it’s up to EBOLA to turn some heads. EBOLA that is UK-based musician Ben Hudson, who’s also a founding member of the Brighton-based Wrong Music crew and has already released a string of records and performed various dance floor sets…
‘Painkillers’ breaks the first ground with cold blowing winds in the background, merged with the buzzing of higher frequency modulation, followed by a really deep bass-quake and the final start of rhythmic synth lines, subsequently to which crunchy break beats kick in. though the real highlight is the frisky use of basses. ‘Teledidonics’ follows a similar scheme, but is a bit slower with more punch on the chopped beats. Casually it features some vocal lines. The Enduser remix of ‘Painkillers’ doesn’t have much in common with the original. It doesn’t play as much with bass frequencies as it does with the beats which are the real stars in the mix, working from a drum’n’bass approach that, even though it’s going through some minor tempo changes never looses its relentless power, I sharp contrast to Shitmat's DMZ Lamb ChuffChuff Remix of ‘Teledonics’ putting the emphasis on a electronic playfulness with lots of sonic twists and edges while even infusing a bit of ambient.
This release has two faces and both have their individual charm. The original tracks are suited for the use in clubs and will work quite well in that environment, I believe. The other two ones a re of a more complex nature and best suited to listen to them on your headphones to hear out all the tiny details. The downer of the release is its very short playing time. Maybe that’s a point to work on future issues of the series.
