Album Review

EISSCHOCK is the electronic solo project of a female artist from Germany. In 2006, she released her debut album ‘Therapie’ and now, about two years later, the EP ‘Play the Game’ is unleashed.

It all starts with the first track, called ‘Hass Mich’, which presents itself very driving with minimal sequencer lines and pummelling beats. The vocal lines somehow don’t seem to fit very well to the track. Sounds a bit strange to me! The following title-track sounds like one of the old-school industrial tracks; very sub-cooled from its rhythm section. Various samples are layered on top of it, like machine gun salvoes. The vocals are more spoken word, mostly reverberating through the track if they appear. With ‘Pictures of the Past’, the whole sound becomes more melody through some spherical layers and it reminds a little of SARA NOXX at times. With less melody yet more steel-like beat staccatos comes ‘Platitude’, before ‘Far Far Away’ closes the EP with a heavily Synth Pop influenced track.

Neither the music nor the vocals did impress me, really. Admittedly I heard worse things than that, but this mixture is average at best from my point of view.
