Before CHAINREACTOR was signed at the label ProNoize / Dark Dimensions in 2009, the project´s mastermind Jens Minor had used the pseudonym SPAWN OF ANGUISH and contributed some pieces, for example the track `Stalinallee´, to several compilations. Thus, he isn´t an unknown quantity anymore, though `X-tinction´ is his debut album. Having a look at the all in all 15 tracks, their martial titles such as `Psychokiller´ or `Hexenfütterung´ reveal a bit of their mood and promise to appeal for those who aren´t tender-footed. My first impression turned out to be true while I was listening to the album.
The central features of `X-tinction´ are the aggressive beats and distorted rhythms that are closer to Techno than to Industrial sounds. Instead of vocals you will only find sequences of brute speeches or quotations such as “Ich will deinen Körper zermalmen” (a translation for non-Germans: “I want to crush your body”). Every now and then, speaking choirs as heard on `Blühende Landschaften´ accompany the pumping and minimalistic soundscape. The samples are mostly taken from various speeches of former politicians, but as this stylistic device is often part of the tracks, it appears overused to me. For people like me who aren´t die hard dancers on the dark clubs´ floors, the album displays a lack of alternation and lyrics. Therefore, it isn´t my cup of tea. Nevertheless, I can imagine that it is recommendable for everyone who enjoys Power Noise music.
