Album Review

It was 2004 that four creative individuals came together to form DOMENICA with no intention whatsoever to become the next big thing. DOMENICA earned their reputation and built their loyal following in the following time by playing lots of live shows which lead to them touring with bands like PAPA ROACH. But also alone they knew how to set a crowd on fire during over 100 headlining shows in North America. With 'The Luxury' DOMENICA are going to send out their firstborn on 23rd April 2010.

The opener 'Music' gets the album started in a comparatively calm way with a slowly creeping rhythm and lots of cut riffs, eventually leading into a quite spherical chorus section, harbouring lyrics of such catchiness you'll be able to sing them along after your first listen. After a roughly screamed intro, 'What Goes Around' rolls forward hard with the rhythms firmly kicking against the walls and the riffs releasing bottled-up energy into your room, while singer Bekki shows no mercy in her lyrics for a certain person who reaps the fruits of their behaviour. A shrieking guitar opens the next song 'Above Me' before the kicking drums have you shake your heads and body in no time. 'I Love My Gun' has that bold, rebellious kind of attitude you usually find in Punk tunes, mixed with a little bit of classic Rock. A contagious little tune! 'The Long Road' leaves aside most of the harshness, instead relying on rather gentle guitar strokes and a whole lot of electronics, showing resemblances to the Industrial. Occasionally they're broken by some harder, melodious riffs.

Also Bekki's vocals are much more gentle and brittle than before, just as they're in 'Free' which keeps it acoustic. I must admit I expected a rock outbreak any second but was glad in the end that it never came. Would've only destroyed the wonderful mood the song builds up. If you haven't heard of this band, and I think that's still likely to be the case in Europe even though they attracted attention here already, then go and check them out. The album makes it hard not to like it if you ask me with all those gripping and tight arrangements and the powerful vocals. A nice debut it is!
