Album Review

CAUSTIC is a one man project - one of Matt Fanale, though the album also contains guest appearances. Also of course when he takes his music out there live he takes along some of his colleagues to bring it on. His music is undiluted, uncompromisingly ironic fist right up in your face and gut (and balls if you have them). His lyrics are written in misleadingly simple and ultra-modern style giving impression that they’re written by a hip but fucked up teenage kid but as you get into them you get how blackly humorous and (fittingly) caustic they are and how well the facade serves them to deliver the hard punch and scathing commentary. He attacks anything from culture up to a hypocrisy of gender politics, as for example in ’Orchid’, although I will admit it’s a song I prefer lyrically to its music. UNWOMANfeatures here and is the main reason why it hasn’t worked for me too well, the robotic singing style may have furthered the song’s meaning, but I will admit I prefer more flexible expression in a vocal. It’s also a slower song and the faster onslaughts are the ones I’ve enjoyed more so back to opening track, ‘666 on the Crucifix’, which is a superb opening, one with super-pulse, purely anthemic and memorable.

Fanale’s music reminds me quite a bit of COMBICHRIST here and in ‘Hiroshima Burn’ - some of the best songs on the album. Another song where I think of other suspects - JESUS LOVES AMERIKA is in ‘Generate Chaos’ which is a pure Industrial labyrinthine hammering using the sample effect to the max. Some songs seem to discreetly utilise dub-step as well. ‘Bulletproof Lolita’ was one of the most enjoyed instrumentals for me as well as a great title! ‘Chum the Waters’ mixes in hip hop quite well, some electronic elements as if a car alarm going off in rhythm are a nice touch. Then you find out there’s Ned Kirby and you know why it went into the hip hop combo - an interesting song for sure. The closing ‘White Knuckle Head Fuck’ was another most enjoyable track with aggression superbly let loose and raging, uncompromising relentless beat, it features FADERHEAD and the interaction is excellent. CAUSTIC’s album ‘The Golden Vagina Of Fame And Profit’ might have a crazy title upon one’s first noting of it, but the LP is a really good one and certainly worth your time to check out.
