Album Review

HELHORSE, previously known as DØDNING, began experimenting with music in 2006 when they released their first E.P and then went on to tour with such names as BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, they toured festivals and then changed their name to show that they are the bringers of death and distraction (as their name is referred to in a poem by Steen Steensen Blicher). This album 'For Wolves and Vultures' definitely pushed back some of the wolves which apparently circled them after the first 2 singles being available on MySpace. The album begins with 'Skull Sun'; a blinding, distorted, and with a huge wave of drums, loud opener. Almost straight away the vocals kick in, screaming their way through any pretences anyone has made about the band or track.

'The Last Temptation', theirs track on the album, starts a lot more solitary than the previous tracks on the record, but then of course kicks in with sound of the bringing of the destruction that they were going for. This is the first real track that contains a proper vocal line, that doesn't just have the scream, but a melody in verses. If the band kept this style going, they would be contenders for filling Canadian band ALEXISONFIRE's shoes (as they are no more). This track holds a groove throughout the verses with that vocal line that enraptures the listener, and storms its way into their being. Finishing off the album is 'White Light, Black Hope'. The distortion at the beginning seems to turn up to 11, but when the verse kicks in the synth starts a dream-like riff line, which shuts the guitars up and makes way for an actual smooth set of vocals for a short period of time.

This is contrasted by the chorus build, when the rough vocals come back, the guitars get slightly heavier, and the drums hit that bit harder. the chorus then brings back the style from the previous tracks but because of the slower tempo and tone of the rest of the track it creates that kind of 'punch-in-the-face-attitude' the band have worked so hard for. The in-between tracks of 'For Wolves and Vultures' continue the record in the same style, with not much difference from the previous tracks or from the genre of post-hardcore, however they have slipped out of the generic happenings slightly because the obviously talented musicians force in a blues like tempo and a rough voice, when singing instead of screaming, and this does make a huge difference.
