Album Review

German band MEIN MIO owes their name to the children’s book “Mio, mein Mio” by author Astrid Lindgren! The band’s formation dates back to the year 2006 and took place after singer and songwriter Sebastian Block met guitarist Simon Goldfain. A keyboardist and drummer would complete the line-up eventually and the band would go about recording their first EP ‘Nichts was hilft’ released in 2007. Another, meanwhile sold-out, EP gets released in 2008. It’s also the year when MEIN MIO reached the final of a competition which evtnually led to the production of their first full-length ‘Irgendwo in dieser großen Stadt’ which has just been released at the end of August.

Sometimes you get to hear a new band and in just a few cases they’re absolutely blowing your mind. Some bands do that with the sheer amount of energy they generate; others by captivating you with melody, thought-provoking lyrics, and a slice of melancholy like MEIN MIO. This starts already with the opening track ‘Wenn wir wüssten’, an upbeat offering in its core, but a breath of reflective thoughts blows through it like a soft breeze in autumn. ‘Keine Lust auf Morgen’ blends this omnipresent feeling with a playful ease I’m missing in other songs of the genre that are played on the radio sometimes. ‘Frag mich nochmal’ is a dreamy, little gem starting with a few chords fading away into the distance. Then, a roundelay of wistful strings, tenderly pushing drums, and melodic guitar work captivates your attention before Sebastian Block delivers the first mellow vocals to a low-key piano melody.

I could go on forever about this tune as it has so many special, magical details to offer. But it would be a shame to reveal them all beforehand and spoil the experience. The title track ‘Irgendwo in dieser großen Stadt’ is a very personal journey through the night that we feel around us in certain situations or parts of our lives. This is when we’re just waiting for the light to return to us in whatever shape that might be. ‘Am Ende’ lives on the intimacy of the piano and its interplay with Block’s vocals! It’s simple yet huge in its emotional delivery and i can't say anything more than that I just love it. All in all, this album is a revelation for aficionados of emotive, heartfelt music and something that shouldn’t be missed in their collections.
