Album Review

Is there nothing that the duo of N1no and Din-tah aeon can’t do? Not content with the mesmerizing gothic rock of AEON SABLE and the industrial power of DEIED, the duo is showing us all how indie should be done with a new release from their MELANCULIA project. Admittedly this is a dark and somewhat psychedelic take on the old indie rock formula… but it is damn good. Once again, to rub salt in the wounds of the bands that make crap music and still get paid a hefty sum from their record labels, the duo are releasing this one for free. I have to admire their commitment to making great music but still opting to put it out their for free download.

This album does have elements familiar to their other projects; the distinctive vocals, retro sounding synths, and the sweeping guitars are still present. But there is a new flavour here, which could be described as somewhere between the dark pop of ‘Pornography’ era THE CURE, and the psychedelic hangover of the early PINK FLOYD sound. This is best displayed on the opening track ‘In My Garden’ with its dark sample filled intro and reverb saturated vocals. ‘Fabulous Land’ has an almost Leonard Cohen quality to it with its deep vocals and morbid pace - but the addition of some big fuzzy sounding guitars gives it a wonderfully spacey feel. ‘Fruit of the Sun’ follows on from this with a dark, mid-tempo anthem that turns the guitars up a bit for a bit of a heavier feeling that shows another side to the project.

Whereas ‘On the Radio’ is probably as radio-friendly as these guys will ever get - the spooky ‘60s organ over the Punky guitars makes for a very catchy track. But it is the title track and the album’s closer ‘I Can’t Wait’ that both show how good the combination of N1no and Din-tah aeon are with a great take on the dark ‘80s sound. There should be a lot of bands taking notes from these guys. You could pick holes in the production a bit I guess, but that would be missing the point. Whether it is industrial, Goth, or indie whatever these two turn their hands to, it is always done in such an original way. Here they have crafted another fantastic album, and again given it away for free so it would be a crime not to check it out. All they need to do now is go out on tour playing a triple headlining bill as AEON SABLE / DEIED / MELANCULIA.
